Prepping for NYFW with Emily Weiss of Into the Gloss

Emily Weiss began her career in fashion while studying art at NYU, and after honing her skills at W magazine, she settled into a coveted position assisting American Vogue stylist Elissa Santisi. Fully immersed in the industry, Emily launched Into the Gloss in 2010, profiling the insiders and influencers shaping current beauty trends. We asked Emily to share a few tips about surviving the marathon that is New York Fashion Week.

Shopbop: What are your beauty and health rituals in the weeks leading up to NYFW?
Emily Weiss: Manicure and pedicure, of course. Hair cut and color. But the number one most important thing is SLEEP! I have to get as much as I can because as soon as fashion week starts, it goes out the window.

SB: What are your favorite NYFW oases?
EW: I refuel at neighborhood restaurants like Osteria Morini and Café Select, and pop into YogaWorks for a BarWorks class when I can, to keep my strength up.

SB: What is your favorite fashion week memory to date?
EW: Working with designer Derek Lam and stylist Elissa Santisi to put looks together for his runway shows. They are a dream team, always laughing and having fun.

Winter Wardrobe Refresh

My least favorite month is looming. Inevitably, I let the dark, sloppy cold of February bring me down.  Not this year. After the overwhelmingly successful debut of this neon shoe, I am eschewing the neutrals and darks that usually dominate my winter wardrobe. Peeking out of my parka will be bright resort classics I can layer now and wear through August.

A Kelly green Alice + Olivia blazer can be tossed over a cashmere Ami Dans La Rue sweater now, and then turn a backless Matthew Williamson Escape dress into an office-friendly look for summer. Bright blue and extra roomy, an Alexander Wang tote adds a pop of color to a weary work wardrobe, and come spring, will stow away a light blanket for spontaneous picnics in the park. With a Rag & Bone cardigan, this Mason by Michelle Mason jumpsuit is a cozy cold-weather date option. A few months later, add dangling Michael Kors earrings and dazzle during an al fresco dinner.

Spring Jewelry Preview: Natural Beauty

My Grandma has regaled me with tales from her adventures in agate hunting since I was a little girl. From washed-up treasure to angry black bears, she’s seen it all. So it’s no surprise that I am thrilled with the influx of natural stone jewelry this season. While impossible to pick a favorite, three brands stand out as true masters of these earthly delights.

Vita New York
Designers Wayne Anderson and Shauna Hull take an already striking natural agate, and elevate it to a new level of luxury with exotic skins and glowing 22k gold plating. Making “jewelry for your way of life,” the duo creates bold pieces destined to be well-worn favorites. Wear one of their trademarked wrist belts and a flowing bohemian dress for an air of easy elegance.

Adina Mills Design
The beauty of a raw stone radiates in these part-jewelry, part-sculpture designs.  Cubist pyrite and peaks of amethyst showcase the unique organic aesthetic of the namesake designer. A major statement piece, pair one of her handmade designs with a cocktail dress and prepare for a wealth of compliments.

Charles Albert
Charles Albert and Beth Marciel-Albert create one-of-a-kind pieces with brilliant dyed and natural agates for this Florida-based line. Their jewelry is inspired by nature and the uniqueness of the stones. A one-shoulder silhouette provides the oversized rings and glossy cuffs with the spotlight they deserve.

1 Piece 2 Ways: Bold Wide-Leg Pants

Red pants are a bold statement. Combine the bright hue with a wide-leg silhouette, and you’ve got a highly covetable item that can be pretty tough to wear. Enter Shopbop stylists Loni and Karina. One look at their tips on this tricky trend and you’ll be ready to work a wide-leg in blue, green, and especially red.

Loni:
The easiest way to wear a piece like this is to go fitted and minimal on top. Instead, I paired these pants with an equally bold and blousy top. I love the added sense of presence I get by matching volume with volume. High, high heels, black accessories, and edgy jewelry anchor this bright look to my style.

On Loni:
* Alice + Olivia Eric Pants
* ONE by Otis & Maclain Top
* Giuseppe Zanotti Wedge Sandals

Karina:
I’m a sucker for classics, so both the color and the shape of these pants are a happy departure from my usual style. I added my favorite layering essential, a printed tee, and threw on a blazer to sharpen the voluminous silhouette. To top it off, I stacked on some chunky bracelets and a few silver rings.

On Karina:
* Alice + Olivia Eric Pants
* IRO Blazer
* Wildfox Tee

Bohemian Beauties: Resort 2012

While traditional resort collections (heavy on the palazzo pants and sensible sandals) don’t send me skittering for my passport and scanning for airfare deals, this year’s looks have a well-traveled bohemian vibe that’s positively wanderlust-inducing: exotic, romantic, a little unexpected.

As a would-be nomad, my top picks are the BCBG Max Azria and 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent collections. With luxe fabrics, fluid lines, and bold prints, these colorful lineups are filled with the sort of throw-on-and-go pieces that make style on the go an easy delight. With a wardrobe reduced to a few adaptable, heavy-hitting pieces, there’ll be plenty of room left over in that suitcase for travel treasures and mementos.

Couch-Free Chic: Stylish Activewear

Blog_12_01_16_yoga (2)
It‘s mid-January, and the excitement of a new year has worn off, a cold front has moved in, and I am starting to feel the stirs of cabin fever. It’s time to get out and move. Luckily, my timing couldn’t be better. Mid-January sees the demise of the resolutioners at the gym. Treadmills are finally available and floor space in the most coveted yoga classes opens up. My treat for overcoming the dreaded winter inertia? Comfy new active wear.

Under the heating lamps of a hot yoga class, a lightweight Enza Costa racer-back tank is the ideal mix of soft and sporty. Afterwards, a So Low tunic with gathered sides makes for a stylish cool down. The zip pockets on RLX Ralph Lauren shorts keep keys secure during long distance runs and slouchy Monrow sweatpants are great to pull on after a swim. Finally, a Splendid cardigan is the perfect way to fashionably bask in post-work out bliss.

Standout Resort 2012 Collection: Jenni Kayne

Three looks from the Jenni Kayne resort collection.

For resort 2012, Jenni Kayne kept things easy, with relaxed tailored pieces in soft pastels and bright pops. “These clothes are made to work for you,” Kayne told Style.com. “They’re not precious.”

Not precious indeed. Each a wardrobe workhorse, the silhouettes are simple, designed to be worn for years to come. The designer’s signature ankle trouser is realized in tangerine and lavender, and pairs quite nicely with her relaxed blouses and light knits. But the best stories came in the throw-on-and-go frocks. A cap-sleeve gown in acid yellow is effortless with flat sandals, and a sequined mint sheath makes a commanding case for sequins for day.

Outerwear Update: Print Jackets

Just a few years ago, jackets were something I regarded with aversion—I hated drowning my polished outfits beneath giant puffers and stodgy blazers. Happily, this season’s jackets are as decorative as they are practical.

Right in step with the bright-and-bold trend, the best pieces are beautifully printed. 3.1 Phillip Lim and Sass & Bide offer chic, playful blazers calculated to elevate your skinnies or infuse your office looks with a confident, youthful vibe. For outerwear, the inimitable Lindsey Thornburg cloaks are the classics of tomorrow: edgy, assured, and eminently wearable.

I Resolve to... 2012 Fashion Resolutions

Blog_12_01_09_resolutions (2)
New Year’s Day has come and gone and I’ve already broken my resolution of not eating breakfast at my desk. Hoping that our fantastic Shopbop stylists have more willpower than I, I asked them to share their fashion resolutions for 2012. Come mid February, I’ll check back in to see how they’re doing.

What is your fashion resolution for 2012?

Haley: My fashion resolution is to incorporate more bold jewelry into my everyday look.

Amanda: In 2012, I’d like to work more leather pieces into my rotation.

Rachel: This year I’m going to rotate more classic, wear-forever pieces into my wardrobe.

Day-Glo Details

Blog_12_01_06_neon (3)
The dark days of winter have met their match with an exploding selection of neon accessories. With booties and bracelets in blues, pinks, and greens, this bright trend is going strong.

Rocking an ensemble of head-to-toe brights runs the risk of looking a bit, well, radioactive. Keep the balance by adding a brilliant accessory to a neutral outfit in a classic silhouette. A neon pink Michael Kors satchel, a fluoro lime Marc by Marc Jacobs belt, or a bold coral Kenneth Jay Lane necklace are just begging to raise a demure look to new levels of illumination.

Compact Color: Colorblocked Shoes

A truly great accessory makes an outfit out of clothes. Ray-Ban Wayfarers transform cutoffs and a tee into a California statement, diamond earrings make the simplest black dress a sophisticated gesture, and a truly killer pair of shoes work magic on, well, just about everything.

The joy of shoes is their poetic compactness: with so little surface area to work with, a design idea must be expressed succinctly. This makes them the perfect platform for one of my favorite trends: colorblocking. Look to footwear frontrunners Giuseppe Zanotti, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Marc by Marc Jacobs for brilliantly blocked shoes both simple and splendid.

2012 Color of the Year: Tangerine

Blog_12_01_04_tangerine (2)
For makeup, home design, and most importantly, fashion, 2012 has been declared the year of tangerine. The deep reddish-orange color is poised to bring a much-needed surge of energy to the coming year.

Bright orange can be intimidating. Ease into it by adding a small pop of color to a classically chic outfit.  A neon La Mer watch with a simple white TEXTILE Elizabeth and James top and skinny jeans will do the trick. Turn up the volume a bit more by matching a grey T by Alexander Wang sweater with Theyskens’ Theory pants in the blazing shade. Once you’ve gotten accustomed to it, fully embrace the color of the year by pairing a 10 Crosby by Derek Lam trench and shorts in the same vibrant shade to create an eye-catching monochromatic look.

Resort Must-Try: Unconventional Stripes

Clockwise from upper left: Rebecca Minkoff Delhia Dress, M Missoni Colorblock Dress, Thakoon Striped Tank Dress, Theyskens’ Theory Diller Irly Dress, Rachel Roy Print Pants.

Everyone loves a good Breton stripe, and in the resort season where nautical themes reign supreme, the evenly spaced horizontal lines are like royalty. But this season, a few brands broke away from the Breton, in favor of stripes with a less conventional rhythm. Look to Rebecca Minkoff for a hint of menswear inspiration in navy pinstripes on a tangerine backdrop. M Missoni cut the colorblock trend with diagonal bars, and Thakoon gave thick horizontal stripes a graphic feel. Rachel Roy embraced the squiggle effect, while Theyskens’ Theory kept their abstract print within the lines, decorating a white frock with speckled stripes.

The lesson here is a simple one: Keep your Breton tees in rotation, but give the unconventional a go as well. You won’t regret it.

Fabric Files: Velvet

The Single Breasted Velvet Jacket by Halston Heritage and the Improta Velvet Dress by Calvin Klein Collection.

Winter is a time for creature comforts: hearty foods, warm fires, and rich textures. In company with cashmere, corduroy, and fur, velvet has lately begun to assert itself as one of the season’s must-have indulgences. Here are a few of my favorite ways to wear it:

Shoes
As textured as suede and as refined as patent, velvet makes an intriguing material for footwear. Look to Opening Ceremony and Thakoon shoes for inviting options.

Pants
For bottoms, velvet is the citified version of corduroy. AG Adriano Goldschmied and J Brand skinnies become gala-worthy in plush velvet.

Statement Pieces
For maximum impact, opt for maximum yardage: a long dress, maxi skirt, or bright blazer will give you plenty of texture with which to make an impression.

Fancy Pants: Print Bottoms

The Plaid Straight Leg Pants by Adam.

Stylistically, my heart is firmly set on the classic and the vintage-inspired. Usually, this translates to sleek, iconic silhouettes, perhaps peppered with a little pop of color or fur. Sometimes, however, it means the loud and outrageous—think disco-era platform sandals, fluffy ’50s formal dresses, and the object of my current crush: the print pant.

A classic menswear staple inexplicably set aside, print bottoms are back again, this time with a notably feminine tone. With prints spanning from the avant-garde (like leaf-printed DVF pants or tonally printed Ellery trousers) to the bold (punky plaid Current/Elliott jeans, I’m looking at you), there’s a print for every mood from refined to rebellious.

Happy Holidays from Shopbop!

The Shopbop offices are winding down for a long weekend. Here, a few staffers share their favorite holiday traditions.

Monica, Online Merchandiser
One of my favorite holiday traditions takes place the Saturday before Christmas with my fiancé’s family. My father and brothers-in-law to-be have a cookie bakeoff while all the ladies head out for mani/pedis and some last-minute shopping. I love coming back to a heaping plate of fresh-baked cookies. Maple snicker doodles took home the title this year!

Jessica, Email Marketing Manager
Making potato latkes! I might even try my hand at homemade apple sauce this year.

Rachel, Customer Service Manager
Spending quality time with my family, eating all the yummy cookies and snacks I can get my hands on, and singing “Silent Night” by candlelight on Christmas Eve. I’m really looking forward to watching my little girl open her presents from Santa this year. She’s almost two, and I think I’m more excited than she is!

Pa, Stylist
Ice fishing as soon as the lakes are solid! There’s nothing more serene than Wisconsin lakes in the winter.

Kirsten, Stylist
Getting and decorating the tree is my favorite holiday tradition—from the characters at the tree lot to the oohs and aahs of my kids as they rediscover their favorite ornaments each year.

Jenny, Buyer
I always get together with my best friends to watch Love Actually and bake brownies!

Olivia, PR Coordinator
My favorite tradition is baking cookies with my mom, especially butter cookies. We’ve made them together since I was little. My favorite part then (and now) was decorating the different shapes with colored sprinkles.

Amie, Editor
My favorite day of the season and the year is the Saturday before Christmas. My huge extended family (my mom has 12 brothers and sisters!) gets together for good conversation, a little playful ribbing, and lots of amazing food. I leave the day filled with the holiday spirit (and peanut butter balls).

Ball Dropping Style: Outfit Ideas for NYE

Blog_12 22_nydresses
Dresses by Marchesa, Alice + Olivia, and Shoshanna.

New Year’s Eve is a spectacle of fabulous excess. When else are you expected, nay, encouraged to drink endless glasses of champagne, dress in a sea of sequins, stay up as late as possible, and make grandiose statements about fixing your life? This year my plans include a wealth of glitter and being wholly overdressed to watch the ball drop at my favorite dive bar.  For those of you with other plans, check out a few outfit ideas below and ring in 2012 with style.

Black Tie Bash
A classy event calls for an equally elegant outfit. Turn heads in a floor-length Raoul dress in fire engine red. Add sleek tuleste market earrings and an asymmetrical Kenneth Jay Lane cocktail ring. A nude B Brian Atwood pump with a stable heel will keep you on your feet long after the confetti settles.

Playful Party
Celebrate in an easy atmosphere with good friends and a jaunty Alice + Olivia jumpsuit. Strappy gold Marc by Marc Jacobs sandals and a chunky Luv Aj necklace top off a fresh look for the New Year.

Sparkly Soirée
Wear a sequin- and rhinestone-covered Marchesa dress and render the disco ball useless. Complement a messy updo with dangle Made Her Think earrings. Finish it off with crystal-heeled Jean-Michel Cazabat pumps and really give the ball in Times Square a run for its money.

Introducing Cast of Vices: Accessories with a Dark Side

Photos from the Cast of Vices work studio in California.

When our Rome falls, our vices will be our remains: cigarette butts, bottle caps, shopping bags. It’s a bleak outlook that is juxtaposed with beautiful design in Cast of Vices. Launched by Christopher Glancy and Jay LeCompte, Cast of Vices jewelry and accessories cast a critical eye on modern culture. We spoke with the duo about their line.

Shopbop: Cast of Vices showcases the dark elements of human culture. What inspired this design aesthetic?
Christopher Glancy & Jay LeCompte: Our collection began with prescription pills, an object which has permeated our modern ethos, altered the face of society, and created an escape from reality. What better inspiration could you ask for in art or fashion? Escapism and fashion have been bedfellows since the beginning, and these objects best symbolize that connection.

SB: The amount of detail in your designs is amazing. How are your pieces made?
CG & JL: We pride ourselves on our craftsmanship and our ability to balance form and function. Each jewelry design is sculpted by hand. The process begins with a wax model, and through an elaborate process of molds and lost wax, a raw silver piece is rendered and then hand finished, making each piece unique and slightly different.

1 Piece 2 Ways: Sequin Skirt

1112201P2WSequinSkirtShopbop stylists Loni and Karina.

It will not come as a surprise to those who know me that my favorite bird is the magpie. I’ve always shared its affinity for all things shiny. In my quest to make sparkle an acceptable year-round staple, I asked Shopbop stylists Loni and Karina for two different ways to pull off this sequined Dolan skirt in the office.

Loni:
My number one rule for office sequins: steer away from anything overtly sexy. Sequins have a fun, playful vibe no matter what, so keeping the rest of the look a bit more buttoned-up and classic always works well. I opted to go with a flat shoe and a sporty top, keeping the look fun, professional, and appropriate.

On Loni:
* Dolan Wrap Skirt
* Thakoon Print Blazer
* Thakoon Print Booties

Karina:
Sequins are quite a statement, so it’s important to keep the rest of your look simple and clean. Since this skirt is a little formfitting, I loosened up the top by layering a cozy sweater over a tank. It adds a nice pop of color and just the right amount of boyishness, balancing out the feminine skirt beautifully.

On Karina:
* Dolan Wrap Skirt
* Theyskens’ Theory Sweater
Maison Martin Margiela Booties

Fail-Safe Last Minute Gift: Jewelry

Clockwise from upper left: Bing Bang initial necklace, T. Cyia horn cuff, Gorjana XOX ring set, ginette_ny baguette necklace, Fallon happy cuff, Alexis Bittar woven cuff.

The holidays are mere days away, adding a sense of urgency to remaining to-buy-for lists. Gift the gals a fail-safe favorite: jewelry.

Something Personal
A personal piece will be something she wears every day. Give her an initial necklace by Bing Bang jewelry or a luxe ginette_ny baguette necklace. (Tip for the latter: take it to a local jewelry store to have her name engraved before you wrap it up.)

A Sweet Message
A sweet sentiment will put a smile on her face each time she looks at it. Give her happy thoughts with a Fallon bracelet or compose a message with Gorjana stacking rings.

New Year’s Eve Sparkle
If bling’s her thing, get her ready for the fête that sparkles. A pavé T. Cyia bracelet makes a shimmering statement, while Alexis Bittar offers an artful interpretation of all that glitters.

The New Statement Bag: Haircalf

The Sara Bag by Club Monaco.

Never one to carry a boring handbag, I’ve had my share of metallic and neon purses in recent seasons. But now that shiny and bright are all but default, I need something a little wilder if I want to keep walking the line between turning heads and raising eyebrows. I need haircalf.

While my heart was initially stolen by traditional animal-print pieces from style powerhouses Diane von Furstenberg and Lauren Merkin, a little shopping revealed a world of unexpected subtlety. Haircalf need not be fierce: Club Monaco offers a refined herringbone, and Alexander Wang does wild and wonderful things with simple, luxurious black.

Tribune Standard’s Tawfik Mounayer on Resort 2012

Following up their well-received fall/winter debut, Tribune Standard showed a stunning resort collection bursting with warm-weather must-haves. Macramé earrings dust the shoulders of effortless blouses, and dresses shine in exclusive hand-designed prints. We’ve been coveting these pieces since Fashion’s Night Out and jumped at the opportunity to talk to the man behind the designs once again. Tawfik Mounayer fills us in on the label’s inspiration, social responsibility, and his biggest holiday wish.

SHOPBOP: Tell us a little about the resort 2012 collection.
Tawfik Mounayer: It started with a few muses and an artist. A portrait of Marisa Berenson wearing a heavy tassel earring and a blushed shoulder, as well as modern painter James Nares. Cross that with gestures of Paloma Picasso in St. Tropez circa 1973, and resort 2012 was well on its way.

SB: How would you describe its aesthetic?
TM: For resort 2012 we really wanted the clothes to be easy, effortless, and polished. These are pieces than can take you away even if you don't have a trip planned.

SB: We love the resort collection’s color story. What inspired the palette?
TM: We develop all our own prints at Tribune Standard. We started painting in the design studio and playing around with paint colors. We started splattering, mixing unexpected color combinations.  We might have done 100 paintings. Then we picked our favorites and pulled the palette together from there.

SB: You take strides to produce your collection in a responsible way. Can you tell us more about that?
TM: We work with both large and small manufacturers that share our passion for the subtler things. We take pride in our fit, manufacturing, and finishing. We support local patternmakers and manufacturers in NYC. Most of our woven pieces are made in the Garment District. In addition, we partner with a Bolivian women's work co-op to produce all of our knits. For resort, it's all the beautiful macramé. Each macramé piece is signed by the woman artisan that worked on the individual piece. We take pride in working with them and hope people take pride when wearing our garments.

SB: The holiday season is here. What’s at the top of your wish list?
TM: One day to do nothing –relax, read, eat, sleep, and then repeat.

SB: Any plans to escape the cold this winter?
TM: Planning a trip to Palm Springs for New Year’s and I would like to go somewhere in February post fashion week that involves sun and a salty body of water.

Luxe Lounge

The Wide Leg Print Trousers and Collarless Print Shirtdress by 10 Crosby by Derek Lam.

After a few sloppy years of sweats and flannels, loungewear is returning to its roots: slinky materials, glamorous outlines, and a bold, almost theatrical presentation. Think of silver-screen starlets and disco-era bathing beauties, and you’ll be right in step with 10 Crosby, Piamita, and other designers whose sleek styles blur the boundaries between fireside and formal fête.

My favorite pieces are the most elegant for their fluidity of line and purpose: super-wide legged trousers, classic silk maxi gowns, and soft oversized cardigans (T by Alexander Wang and Vince clothing always fit the bill). Here’s to making “slipping into something more comfortable” glamorous again.

Ask a Stylist: How to Wear Winter Shorts

Blog_12 08_shorts

Winter claims its first wardrobe victim sending streaky, white salt stains creeping up the backs of pant legs. Denim and trousers alike are ruined and nights are spent scrubbing out slop and slush. But not this year! When wet weather appears I’m going to pull out my favorite pair of shorts. Thankfully I won’t freeze because I got the scoop from Shopbop stylist Karina on exactly how to style shorts for cold weather.

LIBBY: What is the key to keeping shorts looking seasonably appropriate?
KARINA: Tights are a must. To balance out such a cropped piece, I also love the idea of throwing an oversized Vince sweater on top. It's a clever way to play with proportions while keeping shorts, so often thought of only for summer, looking like a natural fit into your winter wardrobe.

LIBBY: Any tips for wearing shorts when the temps really drop?
KARINA: Besides tights, tall, fitted boots can really be a boon to semi-exposed legs. A long sweater, like this Rachel Zoe cardigan, can also keep you a smidge warmer while providing an interesting way to play with proportions.

LIBBY: I love my waxed J Brand shorts, how can I dress them up? And down?
KARINA: For a casual look, try a printed sweater; Chaser and Wildfox are designing some of my favorites this season. Toss on some thick tights and lace-up Frye boots.

For a more refined look, revisit your favorite black tights and throw on some black B Brian Atwood pumps (that'll make your legs look like they're a mile long!). Keep the look airy and loose on top with one of many ethereal Equipment blouses and pair with your favorite jewelry.

LIBBY: How are you planning to incorporate shorts into your winter wardrobe?
KARINA: I'll be wearing tweed Rag & Bone shorts over a pair of some fleece-lined Plush tights with a chic and cozy Doo.Ri sweater. A slimmer shoe helps elongate the leg; I'll toss on my Rag & Bone booties to finish the look.
