one-stop fashion fix

11_28_08_shinethrough

Yesterday, between helpings of mashed potatoes and intense matches of Canasta with our family, elaborate drinks in hand created by our brother (a Bloody Mary garnished with a carved pearl onion flower was a standout), my sister and I snuck away from the madness that is Thanksgiving at my parents’ house to point out what we’ve had our eyes on at shopbop. (Issa’s Long Kimono Sleeve Dress, how I yearn for thee.) Times like these, when clicking on a dress leads to an addictive all-out browsing session that ends with an “Oh my god, how long have we been looking at this?”, I come to appreciate the ease of features like the Style File. A little dispatch from fashion land, it helpfully provides trend updates and spotlights great pieces from the site, not to mention styling tips on how to wear them.

The Holiday Style File is here, and focuses on glam holiday dresses and shoes—perfect for me because I’m envisioning a New Year’s Eve in Montreal—along with a peek inside the fashionable mind of Chloe Sevingny, whose eclectic style is conveniently broken down for us through her very own Wish List. It’s just the thing to make me even happier that I’m getting my fashion fix while avoiding Black Friday crowds.

Did you make it through yesterday without a major meltdown? Congrats! Reward yourself with a little something from What’s New.

I don’t like clothes to look new. If I had my way, everything I own would look like something I’d borrowed indefinitely from an effortlessly cool friend with an impeccably curated closet. I think that’s why I’m obsessed with Organic: every piece feels like it was lifted from the wardrobe of some cultured yet rebellious Upper East Side girl who goes off to some artsy college in New England or to live on an Ashram. (For all you Gossip Girl fans, kind of like a grownup Serena van der Woodsen.) An added bonus? Organic’s collection is eco-friendly, too. Some current faves:
Organicjacket_2

Like a souvenir from a bygone relationship with a scruffy drummer type, but with an updated, fitted silhouette. Organic Cropped Biker Jacket

Organictank

The muted floral makes it look like a vintage find and the airy shape feels delicate and of the moment. Organic Printed Bias Tank

Organicslimpant

The boyfriend jean: now in pant form. Accordingly, I’d wear these rolled with a stretched-out tank, big bracelets, and a substantial platform sandal. Or maybe something fitted on top and a ballet flat. Organic Pleat Slim Pant

Our Favorites from What's New
I recently welcomed a new addition to my shoe collection, Jill Stuart’s Christabel Suede Boot. I have a hunch I’ll be planning many an outfit around this boot in the future, and what better time to start than now?
Theor2051111984_94x185

This simply chic shirtdress is so easy with boots and tights. I’ll top off the look with a chunky bangle. Theory – Marchia B Shirtdress

Agjea2003425407_94x185

A distressed skinny jean is just what my boots need, and this pair is worn to perfection. AG Adriano Goldschmied – Premiere Skinny Straight Jean

Hrlow2004620155_94x185

This edgy tee will look great with the AG jeans and layered under a cropped jacket. Monrow – Vinyl Stripe Tank

Congratulations Alexander Wang

Blog_alexanderwang

Cheers to Alexander Wang! The sprightly young designer recently received the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award at a gala dinner in New York attended by such fashion luminaries as Anna Wintour, John Galliano, Andre Leon Talley, and Agyness Deyn.

Staying true to his always-original vision of a woman who is at once street and luxe, bohemian and minimalist, sexy and androgynous, Wang tapped into many women’s innermost ideas about how they wanted to dress, earning a devoted following of fashion forwards.

(Among the runners-up for the award? Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai of Vena Cava.)

We’ve got a pretty fantastic deal going on right now where the more you spend, the more you save, and I’m using it as an excuse to pick up a few things that recently caught my eye.

Just plain pretty in so many ways, but with a quirky print. It’s no wonder girls love Marc. Marc by Marc Jacobs - Avian Print Jersey Top

I’m a sucker for a shirtdress, and this one has a brilliantly unexpected, flattering silhouette. Geren Ford - Shirtdress

The vintage feel What Comes Around Goes Around is known for in a very cool modern metallic. WCAGA - Isis Metallic Jacket

Go on, treat yourself in What’s New.

Our Favorites from What's New
After window shopping (or as Maureen likes to call it, “stalking”) our new arrivals, I have to say I’m dreaming of an ivory Christmas. A snowy handbag, suede boots, a cashmere scarf— something about it just radiates, so very Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Here are some winter white must-haves.
Calvn2000213149_94x185

Few colors really work head-to-toe without overpowering, but this allover ivory look is simply breathtaking. Calvin Klein—Kimber Coat

Ragbo2015413149_94x185

I want to wrap myself in ivory silk, and the daring neckline leaves plenty of room for some silvery ornamentation. Rag & Bone—Wrap Blouse

Elija2017012353_94x185

This avant-garde Elizabeth and James silhouette also comes in Amethyst, but I think it’s especially entrance-making in Snow. Elizabeth and James—Aurora Dress

Love that magical, pristine first snowfall? Me too. Find a winter wonderland of style in What’s New.

Our Favorites from What's New
With the onslaught of resort arrivals, my style mind is moving away from winter to a sunnier place. Unfortunately, my physical self will be planted right here in the frozen north for the duration of what promises to be a cold and snowy season. Depressing. I’ll cheer myself up with three seaside-getaway-worthy styles that I can make work right here, right now.

I’ll start with the obvious: a knit. I’ve been mildly obsessed with short sleeves on things that don’t traditionally have them (sweaters, jackets, etc.) for more than a few seasons now, which makes this a doubly good find. Twelfth St. - Roll Collar Long Cardigan

The color is so pretty and the cut so simply elegant. This would be perfect for cocktails at a beachside bar, but I’ll pair it with black tights and boots for a bold juxtaposition. Rebecca Taylor - Beaded Dress

Forget SAD, this happy hue will have me smiling on the bleakest of winter days. DAVIS by Ruthie Davis - Spring Mock Platform Pump

Getaway or no, feel a little more tropical with resort styles, in What’s New.

of frocks and fetes

Shopbop’s holiday party is coming up in a few weeks, and if the average office party is difficult to dress for, imagine a shopbop office party, where the attendees live fashion for (at least) eight hours per day. In preparation, I’ve been glancing over our newest LookBook for sartorial inspiration, and asked my fellow writers which dresses they have their eyes on.
Ports2001822916_94x185

Maureen: “I generally use the holiday party as an excuse to treat myself to something I've been stalking on the site. This mesh-trimmed Ports number is the perfect balance of ladylike and edgy. Happy holidays to me!” Ports 1961 - Dress with Tulle Blouson

Shosh2008720826_94x185

Amie: “My dress collection’s color palette is looking like quite the ode to black these days, and while I love the nighttime hue, I plan to brave this year’s party in Technicolor. This Shoshanna frock is as flattering as it is brilliant.” Shoshanna – Strapless Multi Pleat Dress

Alice2041624224_94x185

Suzanne: “I say take all opportunities afforded to swathe yourself in a goddess gown, and you can’t do much better than a formal holiday soiree. Though if you’re like me, you’d wear this dress to a backyard barbeque just to spice things up. The berry color on silk georgette is even more magnificent in person.” Alice + Olivia – Long Drawstring Samba Dress

Shosh2009012867_94x185

As for myself? This star-spangled frock deserves a toast for the dreamy evening print and flattering silhouette. I’ll keep the accessories simple with a black pump and small star studs from Gorjana. Shoshanna – Metallic Stars Strapless Bubble Dress

Ladies, which evening dress would you love to wear to your next bash?
