3 names you need to know
This spring shopbop will be adding 34 new brands and countless chic new styles to our repertoire. I chatted with our Fashion Director Kate to find out a little more about the selection process and to hear her top three designer picks to watch for this season.
Suzanne: What makes a line jump out and say “shopbop”?
Kate: We’re looking for items that prompt an emotional reaction. Our customers want the latest and are interested in what’s happening now. (That’s why What’s New is one of our most popular destinations.) I love seeing styles or details that I have never seen before, whether it’s the reinvention of an item we can’t live without, like a cardigan, or a totally fresh style that makes us ponder “what did I wear before Kova & T’s shiny leggings?”
We also identify categories that are important investment pieces (key items to build a stylish wardrobe) and try to find the best resources out there to supply our customers with the look they want. Blazers are so huge right now, so for spring we added Smythe. The fit and details on their jackets are so apparent; our girls will wear these jackets forever.
S: Of all the spring newness, who are three designers you are especially excited about?
K: Jill Stuart made a departure from party dresses and drew inspiration from ballet while designing her collection. The result was a mesmerizing runway show featuring airy styles combining elements of what a dancer would wear during a workout, and evening fabrics and silhouettes. Cotton jersey wraps are worn over cascading chiffon dresses in shades of nude and grey. I love this layer-upon-layer look that still comes off as light. Her collection feels feminine and breezy—I can’t help but think of beautiful fairies.
American Retro is a household name in Paris and we are very excited to introduce this brand to our shopbop customers. The brand offers really special styles that your friends will all assume you found in a vintage shop. Their collection fits perfectly in our Frontier Spirit trend. The pieces are intricate and possess a sentimental element. The suede dresses and space-dye knit bell bottoms conjure up images of the Wild West, and the mixed prints blouse feels like something you’d find while shopping in the Marais.
And Nicole Richie graces us with her sense of style by creating an amazing jewelry line, House of Harlow 1960 (named after her baby daughter), that proves how important accessories really are. Her bangles and statement necklaces are the finishing touch we all seek when pulling together a look. Nicole’s personal style shines through in the collection. It’s very ’70s (gold headbands) and very rock ’n’ roll.
You’ll be seeing all 3 of Kate’s favorites hitting What’s New this March. But inquiring editors still want to know: Any new lines you wish we’d carry or maybe a cool designer change you’re totally stoked about?

I'd love to see Frenzii. I love their maxi dresses. I've bought some and every time I wear them I cannot believe that I got that type of quality for just over $100. I like their fabrics better than Velvet.

Dolan should absolutely be included on Shopbop! They have brought back a bohemian style and made it chic and have done a great job of creating pieces that mix and match together. Fabrics are unbelievably comfortable. I have a closet full of dolan!

Hmmmm, could Dolan be posting these comments?
Posted by: Angie | Monday, April 06, 2009 at 07:47 AM
Interesting....Never heard of Dolan, and I have never heard of "customers" posting their obsessive need for Dolan all in one day within minutes of eachother. Nay, could Dolan be posting these comments? Now that's what you call "obesessive"
