remains of the dress

Remains

There’s something uniquely arresting about a beautiful woman against a disheveled backdrop (just take a look at this pic of shopbop model Danielle wearing romantic Jill Stuart in a back alley to see what I mean). Designers are starting to take this artistic concept even further, actually destroying their formal creations. Case in point: the Alice + Olivia Layered Dress.

From a distance, this may look like your classic A+O evening frock, but upon closer inspection one notices the tiers are fraying, the hemline’s amiss, and the smoky ombré layers are pieced together in a sublime fusion of chaos, elegance, and intrigue.

Though transfixed, I was a little perplexed about where to wear this piece, and more importantly, what to pair it with. Senior Stylist Morgan offered me this sage styling advice:

“This is a great dress for a city wedding or a close friend’s—one where you know you are going to have fun and dance! The neutral colors keep it properly chic yet the unfinished tiers keep it fresh and light. I would definitely go more conservative with the accessories, but mostly color-wise, not style. Shoes that are perfect for the office probably won’t work here—it will seem like you are doubting this dress and trying to cover up the edginess. Stick with metallic strappy sandals, a single statement ring, and a textured clutch.”

What’s especially nice about this study in frayed party glamour? It isn’t a fleeting summer look: the neutral palette and Material Girl skirt are right on target with our fall trends, too.

Awesome post! I love it when you get the Shopbop stylists to weigh in. Also loved your 'Studio Style' post interviewing one of the stylists...
