Fresh Styling Inspiration Every Day from Our Item Detail Pages

Blog_headtotoe

Though you may be accustomed to paging through our lookbooks and trend features for styling tips, you can also find fresh fashion inspiration every day in a less expected place: shopbop’s item detail pages (the place you go when you click on a particular item). More than just a place to see a piece up close, many of these pages feature head-to-toe looks that show you what to wear with new styles like harem pants and dress shorts, and innovative ways to style old classics like white jeans and denim shorts.

How to work elements of shopbop styling into your look? I asked stylist Natalie for some suggestions.

Maureen: There seems to be a “shopbop school of styling,” a common thread of effortless cool that comes through in all the looks. What are some signature characteristics of shopbop’s styling? Can you offer some tips we can try at home?

Natalie: Shopbop’s styling is edgy with a street-wear influence. It very much personifies the hip, fashionable girl who mixes pieces together in her own way. To get the shopbop look, rough things up a bit. Give your outfit less structure by sloppy-tucking (“sloppy tuck” technique seen above in the Elie Tahari  pic) a loose-fitting t-shirt and letting the hair be all natural, like you just rolled out of bed. Give an old pair of jeans some character by bleaching or distressing them to get that distinguished, worn-in look.
(Or you can cheat and buy pre-distressed jeans. Ed.)

Maureen: You have an envy-inspiring way of putting basic pieces together into outfits that are pulled-together but never over-thought. What kinds of things do you consider when you’re assembling a total look?

Natalie: First off, proportion is key to making an outfit feel fashion-forward, not frumpy. For example, when putting a basic oversized tee with a pair of skinny jeans, lend the look some balance by giving the tee a sloppy tuck and maybe throwing a tailored sleeveless vest over it. I also consider different, unexpected ways to style a basic piece. For example, you can take a flannel shirt and pair it with some cutoff shorts and studded sandals and you have a casual day look. But put the flannel underneath a tailored blazer, and add some dark-wash jeans and pumps and you have the ultimate night look.
