Fall’s Best Blouse: The Pussy Bow

The preferred top of modest midcentury secretaries, the pussy bow blouse has been reborn this season. As feminine as ever, the soft neck tie is set off with delicately puffed shoulders, thick pleats, or in the case of Derek Lam, liquid lamé. Wear a print style by DVF tucked into a sleek pencil, or don a silk iteration by Zac Posen with a full leather skirt. For the more modern among us, a dressed-down approach is best: a classic white style from the Rachel Zoe collection worn with jeans, or a rich burnt sienna blouse from See by Chloé paired with retro knit shorts.

Inspired Pairing: DANNIJO & Vena Cava

For their fall collection, Vena Cava designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock took inspiration from the elegant side of the early ’90s (think Azzedine Alaïa and Donna Karan’s streamlined designs), so it’s no surprise that Danielle and Jodie Snyder, the sisters behind DANNIJO, looked to ’90s-era supermodels when designing the jewelry for Vena Cava’s runway show.

The all-metal pieces are as sleek as their muses, and Vena Cava’s wide-neck dresses and off-shoulder tops put the emphasis squarely on the architectural necklaces and earrings. Play up the glamour by wearing them now with a halter jumpsuit or a slinky Halston Heritage dress–until, at least, the Vena Cava fall collection lands at Shopbop.

Introducing Donna Karan Casual Luxe

Independent of the Donna Karan New York collection, yet integrated into the brand’s total story, Donna Karan Casual Luxe is casual sophistication with a washed and textured feel. It is the missing link between uptown and downtown, urban and suburban, and for pre-fall, the brand looks out on an urban window. A seasonless palette rendered in soft cotton and jersey offers feminine silhouettes with a masculine touch: a jersey dress kisses curves and is toughened with a leather harness belt and biker boots.

Donna Karan understands that a woman’s style is constantly evolving, and Casual Luxe is the complement that completes her wardrobe.

Ask a Stylist: How to Wear Midi Dresses & Skirts

Though I’m a longtime devotee of the maxi dress, there’s something about a midi hem that looks so fresh for fall. But since I’ve never tried the look myself, I asked Shopbop stylist Karina for a little help on how to style it.

Tonya: In terms of proportion, this is a tricky length to pull off. How can I wear a midi dress or skirt without looking stumpy?
Karina: For midi skirts, it's all about contrasting pieces to add some length. For example, pairing a tailored skirt with a blousy top or, on the opposite end, a flowy skirt with a fitted top. I love the idea of tucking shirts into midi skirts and throwing a belt around the waist. It's a great way to add another element of interest to the outfit while giving your body more definition.

Tonya: How can I style the midi hem to wear it into fall?
Karina: A perfect fall silhouette with a midi hem will undoubtedly include a structured, cropped blazer or bomber to really elongate the legs. I'm also crazy about the idea of the midi hem over tall, high-heel boots–yet another way to play with proportions and keep the look very lean and chic.

Tonya: Is there a particular midi dress or skirt you have your eye on? How would you style it?
Karina: I’m enamored with Madewell’s Orchard Skirt. It’s nice and airy for summer, yet the color will transition perfectly into fall. I’ll be wearing it with a crisp white tee layered with long necklaces, a distressed leather belt, and my Frye ballet flats in cognac.

New to Shopbop: Cushnie et Ochs

At left: Designers Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs. At right: A F/W 2011 runway look.

Recently announced as a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist, Cushnie et Ochs has brought its sleek, sexy, and sophisticated looks to Shopbop. Launched in 2008 by Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, the line highlights the female form with draping and tailoring, creating wearable high-fashion pieces. When asked by Vogue.com to describe their line in five words, the designers offered- “cool, sexy, sleek, sophisticated, and effortless,” and the fall/winter 2011 ready-to-wear collection is dripping with examples. A sleeveless leather top inspires Matrix-like attitude the moment you zip it on. Draped shirts and dresses have a hard edge yet maintain a sexy femininity.  Details like goat hair trim, angular leather panels and body-skimming dresses call out to be worn by the woman who is strong, confident, and appreciates all things sleek.

Cushnie et Ochs is fast becoming the fashion forward’s go-to label. Don’t forget to try the black bead nail technique used on their fall runway to complete the look.

Personal Favorites: One of a Kind Jewelry

We all turn to jewelry to make a look our own. Whether it be a beaded bracelet we picked up in Bali or simple earrings gifted by a grandmother, the baubles we choose to put on every day are what set us apart from the crowd.

No one knows this better than jewelry designers who use one-of-a-kind materials in their creations. Jody Candrian jewelry is crafted to display the unique imperfections of each hand-picked stone, ensuring no two pieces are alike. Cynthia Dugan incorporates found treasures like vintage medallions and pendants into her designs, while Vanessa Mooney specializes in mixing colors, textures, and unique materials, like vintage African glass beads. And Kora jewelry, handcrafted with bone and brass by artisans in East Africa, supports sustainable business development and fair prices, making their pieces special in more ways than one.

Staff Poll: How Will You Wear Burgundy?

A color favorite on nearly every runway that showed at NYFW last February (BCBG, Derek Lam, Jill Stuart, and Rebecca Taylor, to name but a few), burgundy has emerged as a key color story for fall 2011. I asked a few of our ever-stylish staffers how they’ll work the color into their autumn wardrobe.

Morgan | Style Director
I’ll wear it monochromatic from the waist down and match my cropped pants or skirt to my shoes. If the pieces are not the same shade, even better! Try these Alice + Olivia pants with these Jeffrey Campbell shoes.

Jenny | Buyer
Just bought this Kain Label tee in Berry! I’ll wear it with white jeans and last year’s Alexander Wang mixed-animal sandals.

Maureen | Creative Editor
Some of my favorite fall runway looks featured head-to-toe wine tones, or used deep burgundy as a neutral paired back to brights. Love the idea (have yet to road test it) of Bordeaux paired back to red, like our stylists did with this Tibi sweater. Or a wine-colored, flared cord with a silk bow-blouse and ’70s wedges.

Jane | Buyer
Love burgundy! I’ll wear a burgundy pant with a blush top, and I love the idea of mixing it with red. It’s a timeless color.

Loni | Stylist
Burgundy is one of those rich, intense colors that also works as a fabulous neutral. I just picked up the Elizabeth and James leather bells, which I plan to wear with a blush blouse and my favorite navy felted blazer.

Monica | Merchandiser
The berry shade adds just the right amount of glamour to any ensemble. I am pining over the romantic color of this Elizabeth and James skirt. I’ll pair it with a pop of red (in the form of an Equipment blouse) and some leopard Sam Edelman pumps.

Darcy | DMM
I love it paired with acid brights or pastels. Burgundy is a new neutral!

Libby G. | Buyer
I love the DVF turtleneck dress pictured, and am obsessed with this Alice + Olivia dress, a Shopbop exclusive.

Libby S. | Assistant Editor
Burgundy is such a classic fall color. My perfect outfit is this Tibi pant paired with a crisp white RED Valentino blouse and leopard Steven by Steve Madden wedges.

Holly | Merchandiser
I love the Alice + Olivia Arthur Pants paired with a punchy red or soft blush top.
