She’s the Bop: Jazzi McGilbert

Nylon editor and blogger, Jazzi McGilbert.

If you read magazines like NYLON and Teen Vogue, you've probably seen Jazzi McGilbert of JazziMcG.com.

The LA fashion stylist partial to vintage dresses, Kelly Wearstler prints, and burnt plum lipstick has amazing style whether she's in front of or behind the camera. (Proof: She was hand-picked by Mary-Kate and Ashley to star in their OlsenBoye campaign.) I was lucky enough to work with JMG during my time @NylonMag, and much to my raging jealousy, she really does look that good every day. (Meanwhile, I sometimes arrived at the office in pajamas. Oookay, they were my mom's vintage Pierre Cardin pajamas, but still...)

So when Shopbop asked me to profile some of the most stylish girls I know, Jazzi was at the top of my list. Below, what's on her list, including a Marc by Marc jumpsuit that you should buy now, because it's going to sell out...

FARAN KRENTCIL: Before you became a professional stylist, you were a college student with a very successful blog. Why did you decide to start blogging?
JAZZI MCGILBERT: I was born into generation LiveJournal. It's just what we did: Document our angst online for no one or everyone to read, because we're all such special snowflakes (now equipped with pro-sumer cameras)! Actually, before I started blogging about my style, I was documenting my internships. There wasn't a lot of helpful information about breaking into the fashion industry online. I never had an "in" to the industry, and I wanted other girls to see an honest journey from outsider to kinda-sorta insider. I've worked my way from South Central LA to Vogue and now I'm an editor at NYLON (!), and it's been quite a journey. Why not share it with some visuals?

FK: When and how did you realize strangers/fans were reading your blog, and not just your friends? What was that like?
JM: Comments and emails, man. It's like thinking you're talking to yourself in a dark room, and suddenly someone talks back! Then those moments that I timidly introduced myself to some of favorite bloggers and writers, and they already knew who I was! That's trippy. I still try to blog like no one's watching and only blog when I really have something to say, though. My readers are really lovely and bear with me.

How to Wear Distressed Denim

On Rachel (left): Rag & Bone/JEAN skinny jeans, 10 Crosby Derek Lam sweater, Clover Canyon tunic, See by Chloé booties. On Pa (right): Joe’s Jeans skinny jeans, Yigal Azrouel jacket, Calvin Klein Collection booties, Maison Martin Margiela tote.

As a longtime advocate for all things ripped, torn, and faded, I am happy to report that distressed denim is back in a big way for fall. To get some update inspiration for how to wear this coolly casual look, two of our always-chic stylists created outfits for each other, anchored with distressed jeans.

Pa on Rachel:
“I really enjoy playing around with different textures. I took this opportunity to style distressed skinny jeans with a more feminine top. A thick knit sweater keeps the look rooted in fall and complements the worn-in finish of the denim. To top it off, I put Rachel in pointed white boots and bold jewelry.”

Rachel on Pa:
“The soft, relaxed wash and perfectly worn distressing drew me to these jeans for Pa. They pair really well with the edgy feel of a fur and leather jacket. A sleek leather tote and black pointed boots look great, but can feel a bit too rough, so I rolled the jeans for just a hint of preppy style.”

Ask Shopbop: Wear a Spring 2013 Runway Trend Right Now

Runway_Now_Edit.550

Fashion month is in full swing, how can I make a runway trend work for right now?

Looking to the upcoming season for wardrobe inspiration is one of my favorite parts of fashion. From the New York runways, I am hands down the most excited about all the pops of orange. Among others, Chris Benz, VPL, and Suno, used this versatile color in brilliant hues to accent their spring lines. Being that it is a seasonal chameleon, orange is one of the easiest colors to add into your wardrobe. As we saw on the runways, spring orange is bright, neon even. In summer, it becomes more saturated, leading into crisp hues for fall, and an almost burnt look for winter.

In any shade, orange is such a strong color that it pairs best with bold textures, like tweed, suede, and chunky knits. I like to mix hues, creating a monochromatic look, and balance it with a strategic neutral, like navy or grey. Yellows and reds bring out the spectrum of cool undertones, while browns activate the rustier elements. Another great pairing is orange and black—it looks very luxe. Just be sure to use an orange with strong tones of brown. The burnt hue will keep it from veering into Halloween territory.

Seen @ Shopbop: Fall Hats

Seen at SB Hats

Hats, the longtime staple of the fashion-forward, are making a push to be the must-have accessory for fall. Personally, I used to fear hats— I bought them but never knew how wear them. This fall, I’ve armed myself with a hat how-to and sought out some well-topped inspiration. Of course, I needed to look no further than the stylish Shopbop studio. These ladies have been spotted in styles both elegant and bohemian, proving that all you really need to pull off this on-trend look is a confident smile.

Meet Fortnight Lingerie: Underpinnings with a Fashion Focus

Fortnight Designer Christina Remenyi and pieces from her 2012 collection.

Fortnight Lingerie is designed to be different. The brand focuses on creating the perfect fit in each piece, and they do it with a focus on vintage-meets-modern fashion. We spoke with Owner/Designer Christina Remenyi about her inspiration, who she’s designing for, and the benefits of producing her line in Canada.

SHOPBOP: Tell us a little about the inspiration behind the Fortnight label.
CHRISTINA REMENYI: Fortnight was created to revitalize the classic beauty of lingerie and to bridge the gap between fashion and lingerie. We aim to design garments that are both functional and fashionable, allowing the wearer to adapt each piece for intimate or formal occasions, to stand alone or to be layered.

SB: Who is the Fortnight woman?
CR: The Fortnight woman is free-spirited, confident, embraces fashion, and appreciates quality in every aspect of her life.

SB: The aesthetic of the brand feels a little vintage, a little modern. How do you approach design to achieve this unique mix?
CR: While we always nod to the classic beauty and tailoring found in vintage lingerie, at the same time, it’s also very important to us to create modern silhouettes that can easily be incorporated into our modern wardrobes. We do this by using fabrics that are lightweight, soft, and durable. We go through many drafts and fittings on a wide range of body types to achieve the perfect fit. Many of us love showing off our lingerie, whether it be through a sheer top or with a peek of a shoulder strap. We want to design pieces that look as good with your clothes as they do without.

SB: Flipping through your lookbook, there are quotes below each look. Can you tell us about what they mean and where they come from?
CR: Each piece in the 2012 collection was named after a classic rock muse. The quotes below each photo are lines from their songs. From Angie to Jolene, these carefree rebels embody the Fortnight woman and were the muses behind this collection.

SB: The label is made in Canada. What are the advantages in producing there?
CR: All Fortnight pieces are designed and made in-house. We truly believe that lingerie is best made in small, controlled quantities. Every stitch and millimeter is so important to achieving the perfect fit. Producing everything in-house allows us to keep an eye on every aspect of production.
