I am at a dive bar with my friends from drama class. (Yes, when not chasing after these Rag & Bone boots, I write plays and sometimes take drama classes. That's another post. Anyway…) We're gathered around a flat-backed piano, clutching bottles of Heineken and shouting songs from Cabaret at the top of our lungs. (This is either the best or worst night ever, depending on your feelings about "Don't Tell Mama.") We're just being Saturday night goofballs when suddenly, some movie stars arrive.

First through the door is Scarlett Johansson, the brainy bombshell currently starring in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Next up is Emily Blunt, a fashion goddess since her icy turn in The Devil Wears Prada. Finally, Mamie Gummer, known to theater geeks as "Meryl Streep's Daughter" and Gossip Girl fans as "The cute blonde on the funny hospital show that's on after Gossip Girl."

Living in New York, I see lots of celebrities. And here's one thing I can tell you about famous girls: US Weekly may give them the "just like us" treatment, but the fact is, you can always tell when someone's a star, even when they're crammed into a West Village dive bar belting Oklahoma. It's not because they're beautiful (which they are, sometimes), or super-thin (which they are, most times). It's because they've perfected something we'll call The Off Duty Starlet Look—and it's not that hard to copy.

The Off Duty Starlet Look (ODSL—not to be confused with ODLR, Oscar de la Renta!) relies on the principles of layering, casual luxury, and The Big/Small Theory. Learn how to combine them, and you too can look like Ryan Gosling's secret girlfriend. Here's what I mean:

New Year’s Eve is set to wrap up 2012 with sparkle, champagne, resolutions, and hot party dresses. And since it’s just a few days away, we asked our in-house makeup expert for her top two looks for the year-ending night.

BARE EYE/BOLD LIP
1. In a hue close to the color of your skin tone, pat a light foundation or shadow onto the eye area.
2. Line the lower rim with a peach liner to brighten the eyes even more.
3. Add two coats of mascara to the upper lashes, keeping most of the product close to the lash line. Keep the lower lashes bare.
4. Add a bit of blush and a hint of highlighter to the tops of the cheekbones for a subtle, healthy glow.
6. Finish with a bold lip color that accents your look.

CASUAL SMOKY EYE
1. Apply a light amount of brown or charcoal shadow on the eyelid and under the lower lashes.
2. Line the lashes with a black or brown liner and smudge to create a blended look.
3. Apply two coats of mascara to the top and bottom lashes.
4. Brush a bit of highlighter over the tops of the cheekbones and a touch of color on the apples of the cheeks.
5. Pick a lip stain in a shade that enhances your natural lip color without overwhelming the bold eye.

New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and I don’t have anything to wear! Any tips?

While metallics are a tried-and-true New Year’s Eve uniform, I like to go for something unexpected. Black lace is a fresh, sexy fabric perfect for ringing in 2013.

CASUAL DINNER
If a casual night in is in the works, go for luxe materials in comfortable silhouettes. Exaggerated harem pants are quite a statement, but in matte black lace, they read chic and down to earth. Throw on a simple cashmere sweater in matching black for a soft and cozy, yet party-appropriate look. Finish it off with bright pink (and very sexy) heels to add a little extra NYE flair.

COCKTAIL PARTY
For a night out, you can’t go wrong with a body-con silhouette, but mix it up with an eye-catching pop of color. A black lace dress takes on a whole new personality when paired with bright, playful accessories. The neon pink bag injects a sense of humor, while cheeky striped shoes keep the look fun.
