The heyday of strappy gladiators may be waning, but another shoe is stepping in to fill the void in downtown girls’ wardrobes: the ankle-cuff sandal. A streamlined yet no less edgy evolution of the gladiator, ankle-cuff sandals add a fashion-forward punctuation mark to summer’s floral dresses, pastoral linen, and casual cutoffs. Though defined by minimalist lines (see Diane von Furstenberg’s cutout version and Opening Ceremony’s slouchy silhouettes), some brands are prone to embellishment: Elizabeth and James plays with macramé, while Alexander Wang accents his cuffs with a curtain of fringe, and Balmain shoes are adorned with everything from studs to metal mesh. And come early fall, more covered-up versions (like this sandal-bootie hybrid) will help soften the transition from flip-flop weather to boot weather.
