Summer’s Most Versatile: The Romper

Rompers by DKNY (left) and Dolce Vita.

There’s no mistaking the value of an easy sundress in summer’s high heat, but today we’re talking about the unsung counterpoint to the traditional hot-weather uniform: the romper. As effortless as a dress with the carefree bonus of not having to worry about a wayward breeze, it’s time to recognize the wardrobe-workhorse potential of the romper.

DRESS IT UP
It’s tough to envision a playsuit as a dressed-up option, but it’s not to be underestimated. Match a classic silhouette with a few well-placed accessories, and you’re ready for work or fancier affairs. Try a DKNY romper with a Thakoon blazer, Pour La Victoire tote, and Elizabeth and James sandals.

KEEP IT CASUAL
Casual does not mean unrefined. Reserve the smock-top terry romper for the beach and instead try on a sweet Dolce Vita romper in crisp cotton and airy silk. Wear it with Rag & Bone flats, a Nixon watch, and not much else.

Ask Shopbop: 1 Dress, 3 Weddings

Rebecca Taylor Dress. Looks styled by Karina and Loni.

I am going to three weddings this summer, and I’d love to make the same dress work for all of them. Any advice to make each look different?

Smart move! With a few simple styling tricks, one versatile dress can easily last through wedding season.

CASUAL
A more casual event means you can have a little fun with a bold print. A bright floral blazer is a great option for a garden wedding. Add a studded belt and fringed B-Low The Belt bag for a hint of edge, and finish the look with loose easy hair.

LADYLIKE
Heels are not a requirement at a fancy affair. Metallic Tibi flats are a stylish alternative, even in a more elegant setting. Show off sparkling, oversized jewelry with a slightly messy top knot, and grab a tiny Lauren Merkin clutch in the same color family as your dress.

FUNKY
If the wedding has a kooky theme or funky locale, don’t be afraid to try a wilder look. Pair a bold blazer in a unique silhouette with print Alice + Olivia pumps, then finish with soft hair and delicate jewelry for a fun and nuptial-friendly look.

The bottom line is to dress well, but be yourself because if you aren’t comfortable, you’re going to have a lousy time.

Collection to Know: Katie Ermilio Spring 2012

It’s hard to look at Katie Ermilio’s spring 2012 collection and not want to get in touch with your feminine side. Each piece feels as though it stepped out of a more refined time, an aesthetic that is not surprising given tailoring is in Ermilio’s blood: she’s the granddaughter of Grace Kelly’s personal clothier.

Ermilio’s design signature is marked in sharp lines countered with soft drape. For spring, she matched fitted bodices and full skirts, creating a throwback feel that could have walked out of the 1950s, but Ermilio is every bit the modern designer. Peeks of skin and unexpected layers are of-the-moment, perfect for the graceful, contemporary woman.

Wear one of her frocks to the next wedding on your summer agenda. Or, brides-to-be, do your bridesmaids a favor and pick a Katie Ermilio dress for your best girls to wear on your big day.

Wardrobe Foundations: Shoes

Clockwise, from left: Shakuhachi Animal Booties, B Brian Atwood Labrea Sandals, Vera Wang Lara Snake Flats, Loeffler Randall Tamsin Pumps.

Every great wardrobe is actually made of several mini wardrobes, clusters of essential pieces from the same category that work together to build a strong foundation. In this series, we’re looking at these collections and offering our picks. This week, four essential shoes every woman should have in her closet.

THE BLACK PUMP
Find a pair with sleek lines and a low heel, and this shoe will be a true wardrobe workhorse. The Loeffler Randall pumps pictured are classic.

THE BALLET FLAT
One to wear with skinnies or skirts, a ballet flat in a bold or neutral hue is an easy go-to slip-on. Vera Wang flats are updated with snake texture, while Tory Burch flats (the Reva or the Eddie) keep the look pure and simple.

THE SLEEK BOOTIE
Flat or with a lift, a streamlined bootie works well with all denim silhouettes and toughens up the most ladylike dress. Look to Shakuhachi booties in brown or black for a modern feel.

THE EVENING SANDAL
Weddings, cocktail hour, or fancy work fêtes, a stunning pair of evening sandals ensure you won’t be left shoeless for life’s shinier affairs. B Brian Atwood sandals are eternal faves, but Badgley Mischka and Jean-Michel Cazabat have noteworthy styles as well.

The unofficial start of summer is so close you can almost taste the happy hour drinks. But before you head out to celebrate the long weekend, check out how two Shopbop stylists injected their personal aesthetic into an incredibly versatile Torn by Ronny Kobo mini dress.

Haley: I love how the clean silhouette makes this vibrant dress super wearable. I paired it with sneakers and a chambray shirt to keep it casual, but with a few simple changes, like layering fun jewelry and adding heels, it’s easy to take the look from day to night.

On Haley:
*Torn by Ronny Kobo Dress
*Maison Scotch Hat
*Current/Elliott Chambray Shirt
*Elizabeth and James Sunglasses
*Superga Sneakers

Pa: The color of this dress is amazing. The bold coral is perfect for to kick off summer and  I can’t wait to wear it to a breezy al fresco lunch date. I took a bit of an eclectic route in my styling, but the dress is so comfortable, simple, and easy to wear, you could definitely dress it up.

On Pa:

*Antik Batik Jacket
*Stella McCartney Sunglasses
*Alexander Wang Clutch
