Ask Shopbop: Farmers Market Fashion

Hi Shopbop! I’m tired of wearing my same old clothes to the farmers market. How can I mix it up?

I am a sucker for a great farmers market: the people watching, fresh produce, and relaxed atmosphere make for a perfect urban adventure. You never quite know who you’ll run into, so looking your casual best is key. A striped denim J Brand skirt is dressed up just enough for an impromptu lunch date and a gauzy Rachel Allegra top holds up for a quick lap through a museum gift shop. Look for shoes with soft, blister-free straps—K. Jacques has great options. And finally, make sure to bring a slouchy tote with room for fresh flowers, tomatoes, and all your other summer market finds.

Diane von Furstenberg Pre-Fall 2012

Three looks from the DVF pre-fall 2012 collection.

For pre-fall 2012, Diane von Furstenberg took a walk on the tough side, though being DVF, she didn’t quite go full-on punk. Think mod girl gone bad. The designer named the collection Macadam Diva (“macadam” is “asphalt” in French), and the harder edge was seen in leather accents and street-worthy prints. Classic DVF fare balanced the collection, with drop-waist silhouettes, silk jersey, and plenty of signature prints.

Now, don’t let the image above fool you. The collection was not without color. Pops of lemon yellow mixed with burnt orange and bright blue. This is DVF, after all, and even the toughest of her girls is still lighthearted and cheery.

What Is Pre-Fall?

A look from Shopbop’s See by Chloé pre-fall lookbook.

The fashion calendar is a truly unique creature. Spring offerings arrive in the dead of winter, and fall goods start trickling in before summer’s heat fades. In recent years, two more players have come into prominence to add to the seasonal confusion: resort and pre-fall. The resort season, which begins in November, has roots in the ’60s when the jet set was looking for warm-weather wear to don on escapes to luxe locales, but pre-fall, which starts in June and hits its stride in July, is a relatively new phenomenon.

Pre-fall picked up steam about two years ago, and though Michael Kors abhors the name, it has stuck in the minds of editors and the fashion-obsessed. This mini season fills the gap between spring’s super-summery camis and sundresses and fall’s too-cozy-for-September wool coats and boots, and it acts as a subtle source of insight into the label’s main fall collection. This offering is about transition. Think lightweight knits and soft leathers, ankle booties and relaxed silhouettes—pieces that will not only refresh a stale summer wardrobe, but will also live in said wardrobe for years to come.

Check out What’s New for the latest pre-fall arrivals from brands like DVF, Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and more.

Black and Grey and Red All Over

Outfit: Rag & Bone/JEAN. Clockwise from left: Alexander Wang Diego Bucket Bag, Alexander Wang Soft Clutch, Opening Ceremony Pleated Mesh Dress, Loeffler Randall Nanette Booties, Alexander Wang Lina Pumps, Alexander Wang Dissolving Herringbone Pullover.

The pre-fall collections are rolling in (more on that on Monday), and with them a distinctive color palette is emerging. First noted in the Alexander Wang pre-fall collection, reds in both bright and burnt hues are mingling with two of neutral dressing’s most common staples: black and grey. It’s a classic trio that works in virtually any combination and always feels cool.

Check out favorites from Alexander Wang, as well as Rag & Bone/JEAN and Opening Ceremony.

Stargazing: A Closer Look at the Star Trend

Blog_12-07-05_stars

About once a summer, in the middle of the night, my parents would round up my sister and me, carry us out to the pier, and we would watch in delight as meteors blazed across an inky sky. These early astronomic memories created a lifelong love of stars. Lucky for me, fashion is in no short supply of celestial-inspired looks this season. A distressed Wildfox sweater has large, bold five-pointers, while a loose Current/Elliott tee sports smaller stars. AG Adriano Goldschmied jeans shine in random constellations and Gorjana studs twinkle true to their namesake song. Whether it’s a delicate star-charm Tai bracelet or a night-scene Patterson J. Kincaid jacket, I know I feel more grounded when I’m wearing a piece of the sky.
