Classics Reimagined: 3 Shoe Brands to Know

Clockwise, from top: Marais USA Canvas Oxfords, Zadig & Voltaire Joe Combat BootsMax Kibardin Mallorca Boots.

We all love the Giuseppe Zanottis and Christian Louboutins of the shoe world: they create covetable heels that are never short on wow factor. But there’s something to be said for a label that treads in the waters of footwear classics. Today, meet three brands that do just that, offering modern updates on timeless wardrobe staples.

MARAIS USA
Founded in Brooklyn in 2008, Marais USA was created with a singular mission: to bring well-designed footwear to every fashionable woman at a price she can afford. The results are ballet flats, booties, and oxfords that marry classic silhouettes with modern details, ensuring Marais USA shoes find an easy place in any wardrobe.

MAX KIBARDIN
Milanese by adoption and Russian by birth, Max Kibardin merges an architectural background earned in Moscow with fashion studied in Milan to construct sleek shoes in streamlined silhouettes. The collection embodies “timeless luxury” through a smart mix of clean lines and interesting details, and though the designer favors excess and decoration, his shoes never feel over-the-top. Instead, they are a study in measured design, earning them the attention of fashion editors and celebrities alike.

ZADIG & VOLTAIRE
Zadig & Voltaire is where casual and luxury meet. Founded in Paris in 1997 by Thierry Gillier, the brand has stores on nearly every corner of the City of Light, and now, they’ve come to Shopbop with street-meets-chic shoes for the feminine tough girl. Think biker accents and moto elements, softened with luxe leather and suede. They make an equally fitting match for a floral dress or black skinny jeans.

Ask Shopbop: A Designer Halloween

Look 1: Rag & Bone coat, Marc by Marc Jacobs blouse, Rachel Pally skirt. Look 2: Free People dress, Plush tights, Jerome C. Rousseau booties.

I want to get the most out of my Halloween costume this year. Any suggestions?

Halloween is such a fun time of year. The candy, the crisp air, and of course the costumes. I love the idea of getting a real investment piece out of your costume. My advice is to pick out the item that you really want, and base your costume around it.

A quality red coat is classic and seasonless. When paired with a flowing maxi skirt and a pussy-bow blouse, it also makes an excellent Little Red Riding Hood costume. Another great option is treating yourself to a short mod dress. In addition to being a great anchor piece for a swinging ’60s getup, it’ll really stand out come party season. The trick here is to think outside the box. A DANNIJO statement necklace could be the centerpiece of a Cleopatra look, or a Vince moto jacket could help you channel James Dean.

On any given day, in any given month, at least three people in the Shopbop office are wearing Rag & Bone Newbury booties. The seasonless secret of these shoes? The smooth tapered toe, perfectly stacked heel, and sleek seaming create a classic silhouette that anchors any look in cool, modern territory. Our stylish staffers pair these versatile boots with skinny jeans and layered sweaters, maxi skirts and casual tees, and even formfitting knit dresses. Styling the shoe is easy. The only hard part is picking out which color to add to your wardrobe first.

The Little Black Dress, Updated

From left: Sea Lace & Ponte Dress, tba (to be adored) Lois Flutter Sleeve Dress, Kymerah Raja Dress.

It’s a closet staple: a short black dress with simple lines. It can be dressed up or down, for business or pleasure, and this season, designers have made the LBD a statement in its own right. No longer a canvas for the whims of the accessories du jour, these frocks have details both delicate and tough, with sheer peeks of skin, leather trims, and lace panels adding a little textural intrigue to the wardrobe workhorse.
