Shopbop Beauty: Winter Nail Art

Nail art continues to be a huge beauty trend— the mani cam from this year’s Golden Globes coverage is proof enough. And while we seek inspiration from lots of places (ahem, Pinterest), at Shopbop HQ, we have to look no further than our own resident nail artist, Dokia, for a fresh winter look.

Says Dokia: “Even with the slow transition into spring, I am still obsessed with the reddish-purple hues from fall. My nails are slightly longer than usual, so I decided to go for a bold, oxblood on just the tips (a lot of dark color on a long nail can easily look vampy). I like to free hand, but if you’re nervous about a steady hand, you can use nail stickers, or even painter’s tape to get a clean line. Lastly, before and after my tips, I used a base and top coat to give them that perfect salon shine.”

Ask Shopbop: Swimwear Off the Beach

Indah swimsuit, Blank Denim shorts, K. Jacques sandals, Vanessa Mooney necklace, Melissa Odabash hat.

I’ve got beach styling down pat, but how can I push myself, fashion wise, and wear my swimwear off the sand?

Swimsuits can make fantastic layering items for the summer months. A crocheted style, like the one above from Indah, has terrific texture and pairs nicely back to cutoff shorts. Other options for layering a one-piece are casual skirts, high-waisted shorts, off-shoulder sweaters, and exaggerated tank-style maxi dresses. I love to layer bohemian jewelry and hats or bags of natural fibers to reinforce the playful beach vibe. Strive for balance in your look so as to not appear barely dressed. Example: while a one-piece that offers more coverage can pair back to shorts, bikini tops should be accompanied by loose tanks, long skirts, or easy pants.

Raul Penaranda for Gorjana

Pieces from the Raul for Gorjana collection.

Jewelry designer Gorjana Reidel and womenswear designer Raul Penaranda met at Coterie, one of fashion’s largest tradeshows, and as their story goes, it was a professional match made in heaven. The two kept in touch, and soon developed a collaborative collection that exemplifies their equally energetic and fun-loving personalities.

The pieces combine the best of Gorjana and Raul Penaranda. Shades of rose and yellow gold create a rich elegance, while graphic elements and strong, yet rough-hewn lines evoke an eye-catching playfulness. “I never thought that two creative minds could work so well together,” says Penaranda. “The outcome of this project is an exquisite jewelry collection that has soul, charm, and personality.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Band of Outsiders It Girl: Daphne Javitch

NYC-native Daphne Javitch’s professional resume started with costume design for film and theater, but her own strong signature look quickly captured the attention of insiders and celebrities, which drew her into the word of editorial and personal styling. Daphne made another shift in 2010 (on 10/10/10, to be exact), when she launched her underwear line TEN at Opening Ceremony’s New York store, earning her a firm spot in the heart of the cool-kid fashion world.

This fashion It girl is the subject of our Band of Outsiders lookbook, and she took some time to talk with the brand’s rep, Nicole Cari, about the label.

NICOLE CARI: How did you first become an insider at Band of Outsiders?
DAPHNE JAVITCH: The abridged version: my best friend and I bonded over Band early in our friendship (we both bought the original pea coat one sweltering New York July). She knew I was obsessed, so when Band asked her to model a Polaroid lookbook campaign, she invited me along. That's when I first met Scott and Nicole. I forced my way in after that!

NC: Why do you like wearing Band?
DJ: The clothes are considered, wearable, and unboring. And I love the brand narrative.

NC: If Band of Outsiders could choose anyone, alive or dead, who would you want to see in one of Scott's Polaroid campaigns?
DJ: Joan Didion.

NC: How do you see Boy. and Girl. as different?
DJ: Boy. is a story and Girl. is a daydream.

NC: Which piece from resort are you most excited to wear as soon as possible?
DJ: The white jumpsuit with the deep V. I wore it the day I got it with a red TEN bra. The outfit is the epitome of brand alliance! I could wear that jumpsuit every day.

NC: What other brands do you think Band mixes nicely with when you're making up an outfit?
DJ: I mix Band with all brands and vintage. It’s a balancer, and balance is my favorite element of style.

She’s the Bop: Jen Steele

I first met Jen Steele the way everyone else in America did: I saw her on an MTV reality show, and later the cover of Seventeen, and thought, who is that girl?

But although the pop culture sweetheart could have kept being an US Weekly character, she took an entry-level job answering phones and fetching coffee at a magazine instead to pursue her real love: fashion.

Now Jen's a stylist in New York City, working with clothes every day (yay!) and inspiring other young women to follow their dreams (aww!) on her Tumblr, The Girls I Know.  I quizzed her in a basement bar on New Year's Eve (true story) about her favorite fashion things for 2013...

FARAN KRENTCIL: You're currently styling Seventeen's beauty shoots. Tell us a makeup trick you've learned from being on-set with so many top makeup artists?
JEN STEELE: Put Aquifer on everything! Eyelids before eyeshadow, eyebrows to keep them in place, the top of your cheekbones for a glow, and your lips for a sexy natural hue.

FK: It's rainy and freezing (in other words: January). Tell us your secret hideout for a cozy cocktail.
JS: I'd say Satsko, a sake bar in the East Village. It's very small and it has really good music. Wanna meet me later?
