Break Time: Raindrops, Indoor Clouds & Man-Made Waves

My fingers are crossed for a sunny—or at least dry—weekend to take advantage of everything and anything summer-related. So, with the forecast on my mind, I found these cool articles about humans manipulating weather and water.

The Museum of Modern Art has an amazing exhibit right now called Rain Room. The innovative idea allows people to walk through a man-made downpour without getting wet. Incredible!

Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde has brought clouds indoors. Using a smoke machine, he carefully releases vapor creating a bright, fluffy cloud in the middle of a beaux-arts designed room. The result is a mesmerizing juxtaposition of nature and man.

I have always wanted to surf, but the prospect of deep water, sharp coral, and great whites have kept me on the sand. An inventive entrepreneur might change that. He created a pool capable of producing 120 surfable waves per hour. It’s even built to be environmentally friendly!

Diaries of a Home Renovation: Powder Room Redo

Loni, the voice behind Ask Shopbop, just moved into a new house and started renovating. This summer, she’s tackling her to- do list one project at a time.

We’re into our second month in the new place, and the first completed project is our downstairs powder room. I took one look at this tiny bath when we first toured the property and practically made an offer before seeing the upstairs. I love it. The robin’s egg blue wallpaper has a darling, medium-scale white medallion print that I couldn’t bear to lose, and the tiny hexagonal tiles on the floor speak so honestly to the vintage feel of the house. I knew we had to do what we could to save the great elements while giving the room a historically relevant makeover. Demo was first—out came the plumbing fixtures and a poor ’80s tile job that covered the bottom portion of the walls. At a specialty plumbing supply company, we found a beautiful porcelain showerhead that ties in with the existing porcelain bath taps. Then, we installed wooden beadboard on the bare portion of the walls and painted it pure white. We finished it off with some period-appropriate plumbing fixtures, vintage sconces, and some fun accessories.

She’s The Bop: Harley Viera-Newton

Harley Viera-Newton has spun records for Beyonce, played guitar for Phillip Lim, posed for DKNY and Dior Beauty, and—most recently—mastered the art of making a rainbow cake. (She's also a certified friend of Shopbop, even helping us host the Brit Awards party in London!) Now the DJ, musician, model, and Egyptologist (seriously, that's her degree from NYU) takes a break from her busy summer fashion schedule to enter the legendary Shopbop Inquisition. Is she ready? (Can anyone ever be?)

FARAN KRENTCIL: You grew up playing guitar, but when did you actually start DJing?
HARLEY VIERA-NEWTON: Seven years ago, when I was eighteen. It was my freshman year in college. I was throwing a party with my friend, who was also called Harley. It was a gimmick, like "Harley and Harley." He was an actual DJ, but since I'm an annoying girl, halfway through the party, I was like, "I want to pick the songs. I want to be the DJ!" The party kind of did well so we opened up the downstairs floor of the club, and I was allowed to DJ there. There were less people down there, so I learned along the way and kept messing around until I found what worked for me. The other Harley kind of showed me the ropes.

FK: Now that "Call Me Maybe" is so 2012, is there a song of the summer?
HVN: I love "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk and Pharrell.

FK: What would you have named Kim and Kanye's baby?
HVN: You know, I think I must have known it subconsciously, because before they announced the name, I said to my boyfriend, "Really, it should just be North. How funny would that be?" And then it was. But I'm not mad at North West. I think it's the perfect name for a Kim and Kanye union. Anything else would have been disappointing.

FK: So you're psychic.
HVN: Not about the important stuff. I can't help anyone win the lottery.

FK: Personal style blogs are full of your red carpet photos, but do you dress differently when you DJ?
HVN: Yes, I actually try to wear something comfortable since I'm usually standing around for quite a long time. It's not the time to experiment with new shoes!

FK: Please describe your personal style in one sentence. This sentence must include the word "record."
HVN: That's impossible! Record?! What have other people's words been?

FK: Balloon, bubble, sandwich, pony... Yours definitely isn't the hardest one!
HVN: Oh, I have it! Okay. I can get ready for anything in the morning in record time because I have a go-to uniform of mini dresses!

We Play Favorites: Jamie & Sea

Clockwise: Eagle Print Blouse, Gryphon Pullover, Lace Combo Dress.

With as much time as our staffers spend living and breathing fashion, it shouldn’t be surprising that favorite brands start to rise to the top of our individual must-have lists. In this feature, we’re talking about those favorite designers and how they fit into our personal style. This month: Jamie, who loves Sea.

Name: Jamie
Position: Assistant Buyer
Brand: Sea

Why you love the brand in 6 words or less:
Feminine shapes in masculine fabrics.

What’s your favorite piece from the brand right now?
I love the Gryphon pullover. It looks preppy and cool paired with boyfriend jeans or even over a button-down.

How would you describe your personal style?
Classic, feminine, and casual.

Do you have a style icon?
Carine Roitfeld—effortlessly chic all the time. Probably because she’s French.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what pieces would it consist of?
If weather wasn’t a concern, I’d wear shorts of some sort, a poplin button-down, flat sandals, and gold jewelry.

What is your earliest fashion-related memory?
I refused to wear jeans for the first twelve years of my life. I hated denim. I’m not sure what changed, but of course now I wear it almost every day.

Ask Shopbop: Wedding Clutches

Wedding season is here, and when preparing for a full evening of celebrating, it’s important to take stock of your essential supplies. Cash, sunnies, and ID card are standard, but other miscellaneous necessities depend on the wedding venue. Check out my suggestions below, and opt for a dynamite clutch that fits them all.

MOYNA clutch, Sheriff&Cherry sunglasses, Juicy Couture iPhone 5 case, Pluie hair clip.

Sand, sun, and an ocean breeze make for a picturesque wedding, but the sea air can do a number on your hair and makeup. Tuck a fun starfish hair clip, mattifying sunscreen, and blotting papers into a bright beaded clutch for on-site touch-ups.

Serpui Marie clutch, 3.1 Phillip Lim sunglasses, Jules Smith bangles, Jagger Edge iPhone 5 case.

Celebrating in the warm floral air is an unforgettable experience. You’ll want to walk the grounds, so bring a few Band-Aids to prevent any dance-reducing blisters. A nail file, powder compact, and perfume stored in a brilliant, two-tone clutch are perfect for post-ceremony freshening up.

Overture Judith Leiber clutch, Tory Burch card case, Erickson Beamon earrings, Marc by Marc Jacobs iPhone 5 case.

A fancy affair calls for equally elegant extras. Red lipstick is dramatic, but requires frequent reapplication. Throw your favorite tube into a clamshell clutch along with mascara—waterproof, of course—a few breath mints, a chic card case, and a few tissues, just in case.

My Style Philosophy: Phoebe

Our staffers are a chic bunch, each with their own unique spin on fashion. This month we chatted with Stylist Phoebe about her personal style philosophy.

Name: Phoebe
Position: Stylist

Go-to brand:
Hands down, 3.1 Phillip Lim. They consistently produce clothes that walk the line between edgy and classic.

How did you get into styling?
When I was young and designer brands were out of reach, I found that if you are willing to hunt, you can find exceptional quality and design in clothes from the past. A lifelong love of vintage clothing was born. I have held every position imaginable in the business of sourcing, selling, and merchandising vintage finds, and while my personal style has certainly evolved as I’ve grown, I still love the thrill of unearthing vintage nuggets and breathing new life into one-of-a-kind pieces. While thrifty pieces allow you to create a look that is uniquely your own, they also present a multitude of challenges: dated fit, unflattering colors, or worse, the dreaded “I just walked out of a time machine” look. Over time, I just grew to embrace these challenges. No matter what gets in your way, you’ve just got to make the look work. Styling is the same way: pushing the envelope with what you can achieve with fashion, and thinking of creative ways to harmonize seemingly incongruous elements.

What’s your style philosophy?
We all have many facets to our lives and personalities, and fashion is a great way to express every side of you. I find I look my best when what I’m wearing reflects my current mood or state of mind, which I’ll admit, seems to vary pretty drastically from day to day. Taking yourself too seriously can derail creative flow, so just have fun with it—confidence and spontaneity create the best, unexpected fashion combinations! To me, nothing is better than an outfit that has a little wink to it. So much of that comes down to letting your sense of humor and personality speak through how you dress.

What one item in your closet could you not live without?
My Phillip Lim cutout flat booties! Let’s face it, the shoes that make you feel your sexiest, coolest, and most confident are generally the least comfortable. When you find a pair that does all that plus you can wear them every day and actually be comfortable, now that’s pretty special. I would be liar, however, if I didn’t also shout out T by Alexander Wang basic pocket tees and tanks. They feel just right whether I’m going minimalist and sporty, or balancing out a more complex palette of pattern and color. I’ve stocked up on an arsenal in black, grey, and white. I can’t remember life before.
