Year In Review: Our Favorite Posts from 2013

Twenty-thirteen was a pretty good year in the world of Shopbop: we introduced more than 200 new names to our designer roster, opened our brother site East Dane, started offering Amazon Prime shipping on both Shopbop and East Dane, and launched a Shopbop mobile app for iOS. And that was just the big stuff.

There were plenty of smaller moments worth remembering as well, so in the tradition of end-of-year recaps, we’ve selected our favorite Shoptalk posts from 2013, in no particular order.

Break Time: A Look Back at 2013

2014 is right around the corner, so now is the perfect time to look back on the past year. Here are my favorite recaps, countdowns, and mashups, all celebrating 2013.

Both Twitter and Facebook posted Year in Review features using hashtags and clicks to determine the events that most shaped their respective platforms.

Pop Danthology created an epic mashup of all the Billboard chart-toppers from 2013. Need a New Year’s Eve party game? Try to name all 68 songs.

Viral videos are increasingly the glue that holds the world together. Clips of legitimate current events, feel-good stories, and even the odd parody or two are shaping our culture like never before. Jean-Louis Nguyen compiled the biggest stories from the web in 2013 into a powerful six minute video.

New Year’s Eve Accessories

Clockwise, from top left: Serefina necklace, Cheap Monday earrings, Santi clutch, DVF sandals, Alice + Olivia clutch, Erickson Beamon ring.

There are only a few occasions each year that allow for an all-out assault of sparkle. New Year’s Eve is one of those times. You can pair sequins with beads and glitter with crystals, and as long as it’s past 9pm on December 31, you’re in the clear. I like to start with glitter hairspray and work my down from there: rhinestone hair clips, diamond studs, a crystal necklace, and so on. But if all that glitter isn’t your thing, simply adding bold earrings and a stack of bracelets will up the ante of any LSD (little sparkly dress). Of course, you don’t have to go full disco ball. A subtler approach can work equally well. Mixing luxe colors, like forest green and matte gold, into a sophisticated palette of black feels fun and festive.

Stylist vs. Stylist: New Year’s Eve

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the staffers here at Shopbop HQ possess some amazing personal style. So, we decided to challenge a few of them to create head-to-toe looks that fall under a specific price point. This month, we tasked stylists Phoebe and Dokia with building a New Year’s Eve outfit for less than $700.

PHOEBE’S LOOK
Picks: Unreal Fur jacket, Endless Rose skirt, Free People tank, See by Chloé pumps, Moyna clutch.

“Glitz and glamour are a key component to any good New Year’s Eve ensemble, but I refuse to ruin my night by being uncomfortable. I love the walkable height (and affordable price!) of these See by Chloé metallic pumps, which are sure to be a wardrobe workhorse after the holidays as well. With the temperatures dropping, I’ll be comfortable and stylish in a glam faux-fur jacket, which looks great draped over the shoulders indoors as well as buttoned to the top in between events. I’ll pair it with a tactile miniskirt and a basic white tee, and I’ll complete the look with a rich, boho-cool clutch.”

DOKIA’S LOOK
Picks: Acne tank, Finderskeepers skirt, Schutz sandals, Gorjana clutch, Jules Smith earrings, Giles & Brother cuff.

“When I think of NYE, I always think eye-catching—whether it’s shiny, bold prints, or color. One important thing to keep in mind when deciding what to wear is the location of the occasion. This year I’ll be at a friend’s with the possibility of going out, so I want to be comfortable, not too dressy, but still night-out worthy. This look is definitely my style, so I know I won’t feel uncomfortable—I can still dance the night away if that’s where we end up. And they’re great investment pieces that I can wear again on a non-NYE occasion. It’s a win-win!”
