Ask Shopbop: The Sporty Trend

This season’s sporty trend lends itself well to unpredictable weather and cool summer nights. A girl can wear sneakers without running and sweats without sweating. It’s truly the best way to look chic—day or night—without sacrificing comfort. We turned to merchandiser Holly for her advice on rocking the style.

A feminine take on the trend: a McQ-Alexander McQueen top, a Torn by Ronny Kobo skirt, a Bop Basics hat, Vince sneakers, and an Elizabeth and James bag.

I love the versatility of the sporty trend. A graphic tee and sneakers paired back to a full skirt is a fun way to give the look a feminine touch.

The perfect weekend outfit: a Generation Love top, Club Monaco pants, Rachel Zoe sandals, a 3.1 Phillip Lim bag, and Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Slouchy trousers and slides are an easy, casual way to wear the trend – perfect for bumming around on the weekends.

Casual meets classy: a Band of Outsiders jacket, a Ladision tee, a BB Dakota skirt, IRO sandals, and a Clare V. clutch.

The sporty look can so easily be dressed up or down. I like the idea of pairing a varsity jacket with a chic pencil skirt and fun accessories.

Ask Shopbop: Shift Dresses for Spring

Shed the layers with a spring-ready Giambattista Valli tunic dress.

We’re in the starting stages of spring, meaning summer isn’t far away. And while this is exciting—especially after this long winter—shedding those cold-weather layers can be a little daunting. My suggestion? Slip into a simple shift dress.

Fashion icons from Audrey to Jackie looked to this universally flattering style for both casual and dressy springtime occasions. The frame-skimming silhouette is chic, yet ultra-forgiving to a figure that’s been covered up for five months. Traditionally sleeveless and cut above the knee, shifts ease you into mini season and prepare you for bare arms. But for those of you who need a bit more time, look to styles with short sleeves and sheer paneling. You’ll still get the fresh feel without the exposure. (A little self-tanner never hurts either!)

Ask Shopbop: 5 Must-Have Shoes for Summer

With warm weather just around the bend, we asked stylist Loni to break down this summer’s shoe trends. Here are her picks for a fully stocked wardrobe.

These Maison Martin Margiela peep-toe booties are a great way to dress up skinny jeans.

Booties are a summer staple. A sleek peep toe lends sexy contrast to distressed jeans, miniskirts, and other casual tailoring. Find a neutral pair for versatile wear—preferably with a heel.

Simple Ancient Greek Sandals look extra-chic with a pedicure.

This season’s revival of the slide sandal has sore feet everywhere rejoicing. Try a classic pair, whether it’s Birkenstock’s double-buckle rendition or a simple cross-strap style. Wear them with or without socks—you can’t go wrong!

With so many colors and prints, there’s a slip-on sneaker fit for every girl’s closet.

Slip-on sneakers are a must for casual summer looks. Think cutoffs, vintage tees, and ’90s floral dresses. They’re a perfect way to inject playfulness into a cool, grungy ensemble.

The ankle ties on these Paul Andrew gladiator sandals are perfect with a cuffed jean.

The gladiator sandal has received some fun updates for summer. Whether they’re laced-up, caged, metallic, or fringed, this style looks super chic with crisp shorts and a modern-meets-feminine top.

Try bright clogs, like these Sweedish Hasbeens, with bare ankles for a fresh summer look.

Clogs are a casual way to achieve a fresher, more summery feel than a pump. A bright strap and wooden platform also look great peeping out from under flare jeans.

Ask Shopbop: How to Wear a Crop Top

Madeline is a longtime fan of crop tops, but this bold combo was new for her: “I never would have guessed to pair a striped crop with this high-waisted, printed skirt, but I love it!”
On the right: JOA crop top, Blank Denim jacket, IRO booties, Tory Burch ring. On Madeline: Alice + Olivia top, Clover Canyon skirt, Joie jacket, IRO booties, Kenneth Jay Lane necklace.

Crop tops, which continue to trend strongly for spring, can be tricky to style. After a long winter of layers, it can be intimidating to show off a sliver of stomach. But with a few smart tips, crop tops can inject a bit of unexpected playfulness into your usual repertoire.

A balanced silhouette is key to pulling off this look—think a flirty circle skirt with a fitted style, or a sleek pencil skirt with a looser top. In the same vein, ladylike bottoms work well to counter the naturally sexy vibe of crop tops.

Showing off a swath of midriff can be nerve-wracking, even for those with a perfect six-pack. To keep the show of skin to a comfortable level, try high-rise jeans or a matched set with high-waisted shorts—they have a great retro-modern feel. Throwing on a menswear-inspired blazer also ups the comfort factor. Pair it with loose trousers, snazzy flats, and a cool hat.

High-rise jeans are new for Libby, but she loves how they make her sporty  jersey work-appropriate.
On Libby: T by Alexander Wang top, BLK DNM jeans, Mc Q – Alexander McQueen booties, Giles & Brother bracelet. On the left: Lovers + Friends tee, ANINE BING pants, Rag & Bone booties, DANNIJO bracelet.

Keeping your setting in mind will also help drive the direction of your styling. An ab-baring style is easy for girls’ night out, but crop tops for the workplace are touch and go. (Shopbop notwithstanding!) Even in a casual office, I suggest working in some professional accessories and sharp, 9-to-5 tailoring to set the right tone.

Ask Shopbop: Spring Statement Bags

Transition to a statement-making cross-body bag for a fresh spring look.

Spring is a great time to refresh your handbag. Without the need to haul an arsenal of cold weather accessories, I like to downsize my carryall and transition to a smaller cross-body style. Besides, biking and walking are much more comfortable without a large tote to lug around!

Experiment with a sunny color or fabulous pastel. Both make a striking statement and work well against the warm-weather whites that are popping up in What’s New. Another eye-catching option is a patterned style or something with a mixed fabrication. One of my favorite spring combinations is leather and canvas. The canvas feels fresh and fun, while the leather offers durability and structure.

Ask Shopbop: Day-to-Night Dressing

On the left, a 4.collective dress is paired with a Sally LaPointe jacket (similar), Giuseppe Zanotti pumps, and a Rebecca Minkoff satchel for a daytime look. On the right, a BLK DNM jacket, an McQ - Alexander McQueen clutch, and Edmundo Castillo sandals make the same dress evening-ready.

Desk-to-date dressing is always a fashion challenge. I love to start with a solid foundation: a great dress in a flattering silhouette and an eye-catching color. Observe the fabrication carefully—some don't make a smooth transition. Wovens, heavy silks, or substantial knits all travel well from the office to an evening out.

For day, top the dress with a structured coat in a complementary hue. Pick shoes and a bag that reinforce your palette, with chic accessories and a sophisticated updo. For evening, reach for a cropped jacket—a cool leather moto style is always a win—with sexy heels, a simple clutch, and loose waves to complete the transformation.

Ask Shopbop: Pointed Toe Pumps

Loni's pointed-toe picks: orange Paul Andrew pumps, Alexander Wang ankle-strap pumps, and L.A.M.B. mesh pumps.

Pointed-toe pumps are a wardrobe essential. Regardless of occasion, a strong pump can inject confidence and fashion-forward maturity into any look. The footwear selection for this spring offers an abundance of fun colors, prints and fabrications. Whether you're a jeans gal or a pencil skirt devotee, there's a pump for every style and every budget.

Ask Shopbop: A Postcard from Spring

Some of Loni’s top picks for spring: a cropped Daftbird tank, a lightweight Free People cardigan, chunky Swedish Hasbeens sandals, cool cutoff Levi’s shorts, a black Mara Hoffman bikini, a floral MSGM tote, and classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

It might still be below zero, but there's something in the air that feels like spring. The days are getting longer and the sun is higher in the sky… finally! Although shorts season is still a way off, it's never good to be caught off your fashion guard, so to speak. Shop for spring staples now, while you have your pick of the lot, and bring your favorite pieces from prior summers out of storage. It's fun to lay out the building blocks of your new-season look. Mix and match until you find some go-to ensembles that feel like the perfect blend of old and new.

Ask Shopbop: Date Night Dressing

When it comes to dressing for the most tender of holidays, I like to wear black. Don't get me wrong, I'm plenty romantic and have the truest of love in my life, but black is just the best for evening dates. Also, this time of year doesn't inspire a lot of color. Chic and classic and easy to dress up or down, black does the trick. For Valentine's Day, I love a simple and flirty dress—preferably one with sleeves, given the horrendous winter we're having! Paired with a lively clutch and well-fitted motorcycle jacket, a black dress makes me feel like myself, but dressed up and grown up! My husband Curtis and I have been married for ten years. We're usually very casual for holidays, but this year we're planning on a lovely dinner out to commemorate a decade's worth of loyal valentine-ing.

Happy Valentine's!

Ask Shopbop: Hats for Everyday

Eugenia Kim hat, Current/Elliott slouchy jeans and sweatshirt.

If you've never worked a hat into your wardrobe, now is the time to start. Fedoras, derbies, bowlers—they're all fair game these days. Rely on classic wardrobe building blocks to create a great foundation, and then top it all off with a chic hat. Solid, dark colors for clothes and hats are perfect for this time of year. Navy, black, grey, and dark olive are all great options and I love mixing them all together. Also, flats can be a fashionable choice when opting for a hat. Nothing's cuter than a girl wearing fitted grey jeans, a pair of monk-strap shoes, and a fedora.
