Shopbop Celebrates Moms at the Born Free Family Carnival

The Born Free Family Carnival with Shopbop, Vogue, and Amazon Fashion. Some images courtesy of BFA.

A supportive—and very well-dressed—crowd gathered yesterday to celebrate Mother’s Day and Born Free with Shopbop, Vogue, and Amazon Fashion. Shopbop Fashion Director Elle Strauss and her daughter Honor were decked out in matching Prada skirts from the exclusive collection, and spent some time playing yard games before checking out the Shopbop pop-up shop. “I’m obsessed with this collection!” said Elle. “Not only are the designers top-notch, but all the profits benefit the fight to end mother-to- child HIV transmission.”

Elle and Honor share a sweet mother-daughter moment on the pier in matching Born Free Prada skirts.

The sunny weather was perfect for kicking a ball with the New York Red Bulls, taking in a bit of midday yoga, enjoying a sweet treat or two from Dylan’s Candy Bar, and singing along to performances by Idina Menzel and Ariana Grande. Guests could even show their commitment to the Born Free cause with a Tattly tattoo. (Temporary, of course—this was a family event!) Flashing those custom tats turned out to be a popular pose in the Amazon Fashion photo booth, although most attendees—like Shopbop PR Lead Lauren—used the opportunity to make a super-cute GIF with family.

Say cheese! Shopbop PR Lauren and her family pose in the Amazon Fashion photo booth.

It was a great day to get out and spend time with family, all while supporting an amazing cause. And there’s still time to help! For every piece purchased from the exclusive Born Free collection, 100% of the profits go directly to Born Free and their mission to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission by December 31, 2015.

Shopbop Moms for Born Free

The Born Free initiative is a cause very close to our hearts, and we are so proud to be a part of the fight to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission by December 31, 2015. In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked a few Shopbop moms about their favorite pieces from our exclusive Born Free collection and their plans for Sunday.

SHOPBOP: Why is participating in the Born Free initiative important to you?
ELLE STRAUSS: It's so important that the West continues to look for ways to make a difference, and I cannot think of a better example than eradicating the transmission of HIV from mother to her child.

SB: What are your favorite items from the Born Free collection?
ES: I love the Isabel Marant peasant top. Not only am I a huge fan of her clothes, but the top is perfect for summer. I plan to wear mine with denim cutoffs. I also love the J. Crew girl’s skirt! My little girl, Honor, aged 4, hasn't found a floaty full skirt that she doesn't like, and this one is no exception!

SB: What are your plans for Mother’s Day?
ES: I'm honored to say that my family and I will be at the Born Free fundraising carnival in New York.

SHOPBOP: Why is participating in the Born Free initiative important to you?
ALANA BROWN: This campaign is sending such an important message, helping to educate us all about a completely preventable issue.

SB: What are your favorite items from the Born Free collection?
AB: I seriously love them all! I bought the Isabel Marant top, and currently have the Alexander McQueen and DVF scarves in my cart. They’re so cute—it’s been so hard to choose!

SB: What are your plans for Mother’s Day?
AB: I’ll be spending the day with my family. First is brunch, then we’ll head to Frankie and Brooks’s soccer game, and we’ll finish up the day with a BBQ.

SHOPBOP: Why is participating in the Born Free initiative important to you?
LAUREN KANTER: I think the Born Free initiative touches every mom. Once you have a child, you realize what a miracle he or she truly is. It’s devastating to think about how many babies are born with HIV when there’s a treatment available. With one pill a day, transmission of HIV is preventable, and through Born Free Africa’s efforts, the goal of elimination by Dec. 31, 2015, is truly achievable.

SB: What are your favorite items from the Born Free collection?
LK: The J. Crew pants were the first thing I bought from the collection. The relaxed fit can be casual with a pair of flats or dressed up with heels for dinner out with friends. The Stella McCartney children’s jumper is so precious. I have a little boy but I bought it anyway, for my friend. It was too cute to pass up! I love the high waist of the Chloé shorts too—with a simple tee and flats, you have a cool summer weekend look.

SB: What are your plans for Mother’s Day?
LK: The Born Free fundraising event! To continue supporting the cause, we are collaborating with Vogue, Amazon Fashion, and Born Free on a Mother’s Day family carnival in NYC, complete with amazing entertainment and activities for the kids.

SHOPBOP: Why is participating in the Born Free initiative important to you?
LATOYA AURE: I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the mothers and babies in Africa, and this is an awesome way to support a great cause.

SB: What are your favorite items from the Born Free collection?
LA: The Born Free tee, Stella McCartney tee, and Diane von Furstenberg diaper bag are my favorites from the collection. You can never have enough graphic tees to wear under blazers for work, and the diaper bag is a great way to add a splash of color for a mommy-on-the-go.

SB: What are your plans for Mother’s Day?
LA: It's my first Mother's Day as a mom, so I'm just excited that I get to celebrate the day in a new way.

SHOPBOP: Why is participating in the Born Free initiative important to you?
MICHELLE LIM: As a fellow mom, it’s heartbreaking to think that others fear the risk of transmitting HIV to their child. To know that there is a solution, and that it’s reachable by the end of 2015, is hugely inspiring.

SB: What are your favorite items from the Born Free collection?
ML: So hard to choose! I love the matching set of Prada skirts—my 8-year-old looks so cute!—and the Tory Burch totes.

SB: What are your plans for Mother’s Day?
ML: I’ll be at the Born Free Mother’s Day carnival with my family!

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas: What to Get Mom This Year

When it comes to gifting Mom on her day, flowers are nice, but something with a little more thought goes a long way. Here, five ideas that will delight the moms in your life.

Clockwise: Jamie Wolf earrings, Alexander McQueen for Born Free scarf, Tory Burch cosmetic case, Fleur’t pajama set, Rablabs photo frame.

THE GIFT WITH A CHARITABLE SLANT
Mothers are naturally giving, so she’ll surely love a gift that gives to her as well as a worthy cause. A pick from the exclusive Shopbop + Born Free collection (like the Alexander McQueen scarf pictured) will indulge her designer side while supporting Born Free’s mission to end mother-to-child HIV transmission by Dec. 31, 2015.

THE GIFT THAT PAMPERS HER
Mom works hard, and she deserves a little pampering. Give her a designer makeup bag with a gift certificate to her favorite cosmetic boutique or spa to encourage her to treat herself.

THE SENTIMENTAL GIFT
A frame with a sweet photo of her nearest and dearest is sure to be a hit for the sentimental mom. Go with a unique pick that fits her personal style.

THE GIFT THAT LETS HER RELAX
There is nothing quite as luxurious as a plush set of nice pajamas. Give her a reason to relax with designer PJs from the likes of Fleur’t or Eberjey.

THE GIFT THAT NEVER GOES WRONG
You can never go wrong with fine jewelry—it’s a guaranteed mom-pleaser. Jamie Wolf jewelry is delicate in design, and special enough to make Mom feel like the MVP she is.

That Green Circle on Facebook #im4zero #joinbornfree

Born Free was founded with a single goal in mind: bring the instances of mother-to-child HIV transmissions down to zero by December 31, 2015. The green circle at the center of the organization’s logo is symbolic of this goal, and at Shopbop, we’re showing our support by incorporating that hopeful symbol into our social profile images. We encourage everyone who wants to take up the cause in a simple, yet impactful way to do the same. Change your profile picture for a day, a week, a month, or until Born Free’s goal is achieved in 2015.

Introducing the Exclusive Born Free Collection + 3 Questions for Our Cover Girl, Lily Aldridge

Model Lily Aldridge in the Shopbop + Born Free lookbook.

Today marks the beginning of a collaboration we at Shopbop are so very proud to be a part of. Along with Amazon Fashion, Vogue, and 22 leading designers, we’re joining in Born Free’s charge to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV by December 31, 2015. The exclusive Shopbop + Born Free collection features designs by brands such as Céline, Prada, Isabel Marant, Tory Burch, and J. Crew, and 100% of the profits will benefit Born Free. On top of that, the MAC AIDS Fund will match all donations and the total purchase price of all products sold, up to $500,000.

Notable names across the fashion industry—including our homepage cover girl, Lily Aldridge—have signed on to support this worthy cause. We took a few minutes of Lily’s time during our shoot to ask her about her support of Born Free, as well as what it means to be a mother.

SHOPBOP: What made you most excited to join Born Free?
LILY ALDRIDGE: I feel so passionately about any organization that wants to help children, and Born Free is paving the way to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV. One pill a day can prevent that. Together we can help children be born with the healthy start they deserve!

SB: What piece from the collection will you wear the most and why?
LA: I love the J. Crew trousers. I think they are a great shape and perfect for spring/summer! The Isabel Marant top and the Stella McCartney tee are fabulous too. I honestly can’t wait for everything to come out. I also love that the adult clothes match the kid’s clothes—Dixie and I will be matching all summer.

SB: The mother-child bond is a huge part of this campaign. What has been the most rewarding part of motherhood for you?
LA: Being a mother is the greatest joy I've ever known in my life. There is nothing I wouldn't do for my daughter. Watching her grow and learn is so magical. I’m so proud to be her mother!
