elle.com a to zee: best of fall

Inspired by Elle Creative Director Joe Zee’s 26 favorite fall trends, we’re bringing you a great trend every day, from A to Z.

We’re nearly finished learning our fall fashion ABCs, and will wrap up our education with Z: Zippers, an embellishment that emphasizes form over function and lends a look a little rocker edge.

Exposed zippers have been popping up this season on dresses, tops, and leggings, but here we’ll take a look at a simple way to inject the trend into any ensemble: accessories. Alexander Wang’s got the look all zipped up with a tough-edged leather clutch, and Luc Kieffer unexpectedly sets a zipper in a resin bangle (pictured above) and ring. Zippers make an otherwise understated boot really pop, whether they’re a flash of neon (Emilio Pucci’s High Heel Bootie, pictured), asymmetrical (Modern Vintage’s Aisha Wedge Boot, pictured), or extend from the bottom of the heel all the way to the top of the boot (Sergio Rossi’s Zipped Over the Knee Boot).

Y? Because we like you! Okay, vintage Annette Funicello references aside, Joe Zee anoints Y the letter of Yarn Knits: that chunky sweater-y goodness we can’t get enough of this time of year.

We all know DVF for her iconic prints and wrap dresses, but she’s also doing some snuggle-worthy vests (pictured) and shrugs with her timeless touch.

After writing technical garment descriptions for Marc-wear, the saying “clothes akin to a work of art” feels apt. And when I say art, I’m not talking about a duck pond painting attempting to add ambience to a Best Western hotel room. No, these are highbrow, highly designed duds that you’ll want to ruminate on the “meaning of” with your friends. Peruse Marc’s interpretation of the classic sweater dress (pictured) in our gallery of modern masterpieces.

And after a few months working at shopbop HQ, I’m convinced a scarf is a mandatory part of the company dress code. When in doubt, throw one over any (yes, any) outfit for voilà!—chic.

The Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Taipei 101: all proof that it’s in humankind’s genes to keep building higher and higher. This tendency showed itself on fall’s runways in the form of X: Xtreme Height, sky-high heels and over-the-knee boots that take us to new extremes.

The best way to boost a heel is with a platform, and fall’s new crop brings in colorblocking (Berny Demore’s Solis Platform Bootie) and innovative details (like the lace-up back of Alexandra Neel’s Androgyne Platform Pump, pictured above). Over-the-knee boots take a more minimalist route, with Joie and Alexandra Neel (pictured) offering unadorned, simply chic suede numbers. Sleek leather is accented with a back buckle in Calvin Klein’s Laverne Flat Boot (pictured), and a toe-to-top zipper gives Tashkent by Cheyenne’s Jack Flat Boot a divine edge.

Elle.com A to Zee: Best of Fall

Inspired by Elle Creative Director Joe Zee’s 26 favorite fall trends, we’re bringing you a great trend every day, from A to Z.

For W, we leave the amber glow of our campfires to head out on the prairie at sun-up, riding the ranges of Way Out West.  Western wear has come in and out of vogue for decades, but the key to this look is not to go full-on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and instead try subtly comingling a few necessary accessories with your cardigans and distressed denim this fall.

Our shoe buyer Denny proclaimed the rider/roper boot to be “absolutely THE sport boot of 2008.” A tough yet earthy aesthetic, these well-worn Golden Goose boots (pictured)  showcase just the right amount of rugged.  A fringe bag is a must for any chic cowgirl, and I love the nuanced treatment of the trend in this Botkier design (pictured).  These Alex & Ani metal feather dangles (pictured) are a gold rush in and of themselves, complementing nature in more ways than one.

V is for Vested Interest, an easy way to dress up, dress down, or lend a statement to any look.

Menswear-inspired vests venture into feminine territory with Nanette Lepore’s Last Dance Vest and Rebecca Taylor’s Twill Vest. For something casual and cozy just in time for cool weather, snuggle up with the Tie Vest from C&C California or the Button Vest by MK2K (pictured).

For that one-of-a-kind statement piece, LaROK offers the beautifully-embellished Collette Vest (pictured), and Alexander Wang’s Beaded Vest is the type of chicly undone piece the label is known for. Or rock out with this leather vest from Rag & Bone, or this motorcycle jacket-inspired vest (pictured) by Grace Sun, in easy-to-wear felt.

Ms. City Slicker, meet Mademoiselle Hippie, because U is for Urban Bohemia. The fall collections are resplendent with lightweight fabrics, and they’re just waiting to be toughened up with leather and some weighty embellishments.

Anchor that airy dress with a little leather jacket (Ever has a great one, pictured) and a pair of tall studded boots, like these from Tapeet (pictured). On the handbag front, go slouchy with an oversized Giorgio Brato (pictured) or a sequined Antik Batik. Then add a peaceful pendant from Kerri Wilder (there’s a free-loving hippie in there after all), and you’ve found the perfect balance between flower child and city girl.

T is for Tied Up—but not the naughty kind. No, this trend is all about the girlish bow, a look that lies at the opposite end of the style spectrum from this season’s fetish fashion.

As one might expect, the brand that wrote the book on ladylike, Milly, has a strong showing in this category. Witness their pretty-yet-polished Polka Dot Bow Print Cummerbund Dress (pictured), and the festive, neo-flapper Bow Shift Dress.

Of course Marc Jacobs puts his own stamp on the bow, bringing us an avant-garde bracelet (pictured), while Juicy takes the season’s de rigueur fingerless gloves (pictured) into feminine territory by bedecking them with not one but two bows. For those of you who don't think the words “demure” and “thong” belong together? Hanky Panky begs to differ, offering a sweet, bow-trimmed version of their signature style.

S stands for Sophisticated Florals, the classic print that’s autumn-appropriate in moody tones and luxe fabrics.

Rebecca Taylor gives us both feminine (the fluttery Dandelion Print Dress in a wintry black and white) and sexy (the Rosie Cami Dress, pictured above, a great entry in the innerwear-as-outerwear category). Elie Tahari’s Carrie Dress is elegant and ladylike in a vintage-inspired print, while Diane von Furstenberg’s Olivette Dress (pictured) is a little more daring with an open back.

Looking for just a hint of floral? The trend’s popping up on accessories too. A cozy merino wool wrap, like Virginia Johnson’s Peony Scarf, is striking in an oversized print, and fall’s favorite color combo, purple and black, suits Antik Batik’s Ares Bag (pictured). And to boldly put this trend front-and-center, don Kenneth Jay Lane’s Enamel Flower Necklace, the ultimate statement piece.

When thinking of R: Refined Satchel, words like “structured,” “ladylike,” and “double rolled handles” come to mind. The satchel is reminiscent of an era when ladies lunched wearing cloche hats and driver gloves with Paul & Joe felt capes. Okay that era is now, and right here on our site—a little vintage prim fused with the exotic details of fall 2008.

I want to surround myself in the satiny burgundy richness of the Stevie Convertible Satchel (pictured). (Can't Botkier just make over my whole apartment?) And the boxy design of Tory Burch’s Benjerman Satchel (pictured) is the archetype of the refined look we’re after, with wrinkled patent and a pinch of snakeskin keeping it on-trend. The Botkier Chrystie Satchel addresses the dichotomous nature of most women’s personalities: the shape says down to business, while the metallic and snakeskin accents say ready to party.

Joe Zee names Quick Print (a portable Polaroid-printing device for Blackberrys) as Q, and it's inspired me to take a closer look at some accessories for the tech-forward fashionista.

LeSportsac is the go-to label for functional bags, and their laptop bags (pictured above) present a fun choice of quirky prints. For a more refined take on the laptop bag (and one that can also be used as a day-to-day tote), the Jazzy Jane Slim Bag (pictured) from Marc by Marc Jacobs is both fashionable and functional. Marc by Marc also gives us a cute logo charm (pictured) to adorn a cell phone (or Blackberry).
