Ask Shopbop: Cold Weather Party Looks

Look 1: Haute Hippie vest, 3.1 Phillip Lim pants, Yigal Azrouel jacket, Theyskens’ Theory pumps. Look 2: Alice + Olivia blazer, Tibi skirt, Giuseppe Zanotti sandals. Look 3: Yigal Azrouel dress, Maison scotch jacket, Luxury Rebel sandals.

Party season always coincides with the coldest months of the year. How can I look good and stay warm?

It’s almost cruel, isn’t it? Party season ramps up just as the temperatures drop. To keep warm without sacrificing style, I rely on statement-making jackets and a hold, wear, drape system.

Pairing a moto jacket with a slouchy silhouette feels very downtown-chic. Wear it while in transit and keep it handy at the party for added warmth and style. Bold pink pants are both festive and warm, while a vest adds layers without bulk. Closed-toe heels finish the look and shield feet from the cold.

A thick, textured blazer is another warm option. Layered over a thin sweater and paired with a longer skirt, it cuts a sophisticated and ladylike profile. Push the sleeves up once inside for casual elegance. Evening sandals balance the covered-up look, and polished gold jewelry adds to the brocade texture.

For the ultimate in sexy winter looks, drape a luxe coat over a body-con dress in the same color palette. The tonal hues anchor it together, allowing you to keep your warm coat on as part of the ensemble. Graphic sandals and a neutral clutch let the saturated duo shine.

Studio Sounds

It’s a short work week here at Shopbop, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a full playlist ready.

“We’ve been seeing some colder temperatures recently, so our music selection has been getting moodier. This playlist is a nice winter blend of edgy, dark sounds that are still upbeat. I tend to lean toward vintage garage band sounds, but thanks to my musical friends, there is some variety there, pulled from mixes they have shared with me over the years.”

Shopbop at Home: Fashion Books

Styled by Rachel and Loni.

Pinterest has done wonders for home design. I spend hours scrolling through images of gorgeous spaces, immaculately decorated with thoughtful collections of fashionable accessories. Confused as to how to replicate the look in my own home, I turned to our styling team, who opened their doors and shared a few secrets to getting the perfect coolly curated look. The key, according to Loni and Rachel, is to showcase your personal style through accessories. Books on Chanel and Helmut Newton project a classic fashion sense while a Kelly Wearstler tome highlights a more unique sensibility. Accent the books with trinkets and decorative items that complement the theme. A knotted rope bowl has a nautical toughness and stacks of jewelry speak to your particular aesthetic. Have fun and experiment with heights, colors, and motifs until you find a look you love.

Ask Shopbop: Ultimate Suitcase, Thanksgiving Edition

1 Foley + Corinna bag. 2 T by Alexander Wang top. 3 Inhabit vest. 4 Bop Basics scarf. 5 Vince leather dress. 6 Three J NYC pajamas. 7 Raquel Allegra top. 8 Rag & Bone/JEAN jeans. 9 Rag & Bone jacket. 10 HELMUT leggings. 11 Rag & Bone gloves. 12 Theyskens’ Theory booties.

I’m traveling for Thanksgiving, and don’t have a lot of suitcase room. What should I pack?

When it comes to packing for holiday travel, I find it helpful to keep a few strategies in mind. First, focus on things you can mix and match. I try to avoid packing pieces that can only be worn with one outfit and rely on versatile separates—unless your special occasion calls for a dress, of course. Next, remember to pack cozy layers. You just never know when you might end up bunking with a family member that prefers the thermostat set to a balmy 60 degrees. Lastly, go for comfortable favorites. You’ll feel more in the mood for celebrating if you’re not concentrating a too-short hem or constricting waistband. All in all, opt for easy ensembles that show your true colors. Happy holiday and safe travels!

Shopbop Beauty: Bold Brows

Strong, full brows are a trend we are happy to embrace. Not only do they look natural and fresh on most every face, but the low-maintenance style is a much welcome change from the severely arched and plucked looks of the past. We asked our beauty expert to show us how to perfect the technique.

Photo caption: Hair and makeup by Milena Bocchetti.

Step 1: Shape
Work with the natural line of your brows, plucking any stray hairs, but not thinning out the shape. If you are starting with unruly brows, a good rule of thumb is to shape from the bottom, leaving the top alone except to remove lone hairs.

Step 2: Fill
Using a flat-top, stiff-bristle brush, fill in your groomed brows with a matching eyebrow powder. Powder will give you a softer, less harsh look than a liquid filler.

Step 3: Set
Once your brows are filled, sweep clear mascara over them to set the powder for all-day wear.

Step 4: Finish
Strong brows really frame the face, so play around with your makeup routine to see what looks best. We suggest a minimal eye with a strong lip.

Studio Sounds

The temperatures are plunging, the days are short, and a holiday is on the horizon. The solution for getting through the work week? An expertly crafted playlist pulled right from the Shopbop studio.

“A cold and grey week is draining to everyone’s energy. I believe the cure is a heavy dose of ’90s alt rock and steady rap, and luckily, that’s just the type of music I love.”
