Street Style Trend: Bold Prints & Bright Colors

A show-goer at London Fashion Week. Image by The Street Muse.

The fashion folks have moved on to Milan to take in Italy’s finest before making their way north to Paris, this marathon month’s finale city. We’ve had one eye on the runways and the other on the style happening on the street, and we’ve noticed a pattern. Actually, several patterns in brilliant hues and bold, graphic forms.

While the runways are having a shades-of-grey moment, the editors, buyers, and bloggers dashing between shows are showing off their peacock colors. Artful pairings of bold prints with brilliant accessories and separates, when done well, make a statement while maintaining a sense of style. It’s making the viewing between the shows this season all the more exciting and inspiring.

One Day at NYFW: Senior Stylist Aya

Clockwise, from top left: Self-portrait. Quick stop at the Shopbop office to style a look for an upcoming story. The ladylike runway at Thakoon. Loved the band at Rebecca Minkoff. Saturday Chinese New Year celebration. Says Aya, "I'm Japanese, but I attended a great Chinese New Year celebration!"

In this last edition of our team’s New York Fashion Week diaries, Aya shares a few snapshots from her week at the shows. Highlights included the band at Rebecca Minkoff and the ladylike looks of Thakoon, and she even managed to squeeze in a Chinese New Year celebration, complete with a hot pot dinner.

We hope you had fun following our team through NYFW. Now, off to London!

Is It the End of the Platform?

There’s no question that what happens outside the tents at NYFW has become almost as important as what happens inside (much to the chagrin of International Herald Tribune’s Suzy Menkes), and what’s happening outside on the feet of editors, buyers, and bloggers is downright revolutionary.

Missing are the towering platforms made popular by the Olsen sisters and famous by Lady Gaga, replaced with single-soled pumps in pointed silhouettes. Sure, there were still a few platforms spotted, but the trend is a decided move away from what Manolo Blahnik once called “furniture shoes” and toward simpler lines. And the beauty of it is the statement is still there.

The pairs we’ve seen have come with interesting accents and well-placed cutouts, brilliant prints and loafer-inspired, choked vamps. And the heels are still high, they’re just not that high, brought down to earthly levels by their lack of platform boost.

We’re not totally ready to give up our platforms (how could we, when Giuseppe Zanotti is turning out styles like this?), but the simpler look certainly has its appeal.

One Day at NYFW: Apparel Buyer Jane

Clockwise, from the left: happy and dry in a cab; two amazing looks from alice + olivia; the 3.1 Phillip Lim finale; an unexpected, but much needed accessory.

We’re covering the day-to-day adventures of our stylish staffers at New York Fashion Week. Today, Apparel Buyer Jane recaps her wet and windy Monday.

Rain or shine, fashion week goes on, making my favorite accessory for the day my umbrella. Hoping to stay dry, I headed to the 3.1 Phillip Lim show where I just couldn’t get enough of the models. They were impeccably styled head to toe—so inspired!

Next, I hopped in a cab headed to Meatpacking to see the Alice + Olivia presentation. Designer Stacey Bendet showcased a dressy downtown vibe—edgy studded jackets over knit tutu mini dresses. Finally, a quick stop at the Standard Hotel to check out the Nonoo presentation. I loved the military-inspired pieces with medallions—so chic!

Back at home, I’m impressed that despite the sloppy weather, my white Tibi boots made it through unscathed. Who said you can’t wear white in winter?!

One Day at NYFW: Designer Buyer Justin

Clockwise, from the left: a stunning dress from Lela Rose; getting ready to hop on the subway; head stylist Aya; a needed coffee break; gorgeous gowns at Zac Posen.

New York Fashion Week rolls on and so does our coverage of staffers in action. Today, Designer Buyer Justin recaps his whirlwind Sunday.

Sunday morning started out bright and crisp. I hit the gym and picked up a large latte, with an extra shot and a little verbal motivation from a friendly barista who told me to “slay that dragon.” I’m gonna do it! Then it was off to the tents for the Lela Rose show. The designer really knows her way around a dress!

Derek Lam was next—I loved how he played with proportions—and then on to Thakoon for crystal-covered dragonfly dresses and interesting layered bangs. After a quick coffee break, I made it to a meeting with a potential new brand, Calla.

I wrapped up the day with the amazing—and fancy!—Zac Posen show. The dresses were gorgeous and the models brought it with their dramatic posing. I couldn’t have been more ready for bed, so I hopped on the subway for a fast exit home.

One Day at NYFW: Senior Buyer Alana

Clockwise, from top left: Alana and Jane with designer Jonathan Simkhai; the Shopbop team; a quick stop at Pastis; the chandelier at Beauty & Essex; bright prints at Mara Hoffman.

Our team of buyers and stylists is deep in the chic chaos that is New York Fashion Week, attending shows and having meetings, and sneaking in a coffee or Diet Coke break whenever they can. We’ve asked a few of these fashionable folks to share their day with us. First up: Senior Buyer Alana recaps her snowy Saturday.

Woke up to 8 inches of snow, so I found my lace-up Marc by Marc Jacobs boots (with a rubber sole), threw on a flannel Laurence Doligé button-down, and was ready to face the cold and windy day ahead. I had time in between Jill Stuart and Rebecca Taylor for a quick stop at Pastis, then it was off to Mara Hoffman, where I loved the all the brights and prints coming down the runway.

Next up was Band of Outsiders—always my favorite show during fashion week—and it didn’t disappoint at all. I loved the first look, a cotton broadcloth shirtdress with leather detailing on the collar. After Band, I hopped back in the SUV with the Shopbop team to head to Alexander Wang.

The day continued at VPL and then Jonathan Simkhai (where Jane and I managed to snap a shot with the designer), and it wrapped with dinner at Beauty & Essex and after parties at B8.

Whew! I’m exhausted, but ready to do it again tomorrow!
