Shine on (You Crazy Diamond): The Way to Lamé

10_19_10_lame

Yes, it is profoundly disheartening to read something hilarious and astutely observed on a topic I’ve wanted to write about. But I’m putting personal insecurities aside if only because The Man Repeller (a site I discovered just last week via our Follow Friday feature) deserves it. True to its title, Leandra Medine’s musings are devoted entirely to fashion that’s confounding and off-putting to the average hetero male, with Medine snapping (inspired and covetable) looks of her own and mining the season’s runways for examples.

An anecdotal overview of straight dude reactions to recent outfits only proves her findings: Rolled skinny jeans with ladylike pumps get the guy thumbs up, as does pretty much anything with fall 2010’s boarding-school chic look. No big surprises there. Not as popular? A baggy sweatshirt over a bias-cut silk maxi skirt. “Looks like you threw something over your nightgown to run to the mailbox.” Even seemingly benign black jeggings proved baffling: “Are you wearing tights?”

Not that dressing to common denominator dude taste is the point (do Anna Dello Russo or Kate Lanphear?), which is Medine’s point, which brings me to lamé. A big fall 2010 runway story and a major presence for spring, the jury is still out for me as to whether this most reflective of fabrications will leave guys freaked or fascinated. (A Vena Cava dress I’ve been stalking and one of my favorite Rag & Bone spring 2011 runway looks by way of example above.) While gold lamé brings visions of Jerry Hall circa 1976 dancing into my head, will my beloved think I look more like a Werther’s Original? The Man Repeller makes me want to risk it. As the French say: Life is too short to dress sadly.

NYFW Spring 2011: A Refined Southern California Sentiment

A number of spring shows this week have included clothing that feels a little old school, a bit refined, yet playful and sexy. High-waisted pants in pop colors have officially caught my eye, as have swinging full-skirt dresses, cinched waists, and pinup swimwear. Straw bags and hats complete this refined SoCal look.

Spotted at: ADAM, Alice + Olivia, Derek Lam, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Thakoon, Tory Burch, Vena Cava.
Key pieces: Wide-leg pants, retro suiting, neck-tie blouses, below-the-knee sundresses and circle skirts, circular sunglasses, wooden wedges.
Color palette: Rust, saffron, navy, poppy orange, grass green.

Fall Trend in Action: Winter Whites

Our winter whites trend report is one of my favorites of the fall season, so I couldn’t wait to rock the look during fashion week! Everyone who knows me knows my staple is a neutral cardigan—I have a million of them. Here I am outside Lincoln Center after Michael Kors, updating one of my trusty staples by pairing it with olives and off whites.

What style staples do you update seasonally? I’m dying to know. Really!

I’m wearing: Helmut Lang pants, Margiela pumps, BE & D bag, Oliver Peoples sunglasses, KAIN Label tank, See by Chloé sweater.

Emerging Spring 2011 Trend: Lamé

Metallics show up in some incarnation every season, and have evolved from burnished bags and sequined dresses to accents in every form. While some designers are whispering shimmer with subtle metallic threading woven into fabric for spring 2011, others are shouting it from the rooftops. Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang, DVF, and Thakoon had some bangers that could double as sun tanning reflectors. The lamé look can be tricky to pull off, but my advice is this: take your cues from the few and go bold or go home!

Spotted at: Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Rachel Roy, Rag & Bone, Thakoon, Tory Burch

Spring 2011 Trend to Wear Now: Uneven Hemlines

I wrote about the uneven hemline trend emerging on the spring runways earlier this week, and I’m putting the look into play today with a Nightcap dress and ADAM shearling.

Girls, you need this dress. It’s insane!

Emerging Spring 2011 Trend: Hard & Soft

Hard and soft. We’ve seen it in almost every show so far—delicate pieces paired with more structured silhouettes. From Rag & Bone to ADAM to Peter Som, designers continue to embrace the return of separates, and in turn, have taken to styling tailored pieces with loose, sometimes sheer blouses and dresses, and—my favorite—the super wide-leg trouser. I am in love.

Spotted at: Rag & Bone, ADAM, Elise Øverland, Jill Stuart, DKNY, Preen, Diane von Furstenberg, Thakoon
