First Fashion: The Bright Side

(1) (2) (3)

Though the knits and furs of pre-fall are already trickling into Shopbop, I’m still not over my obsession with summer brights. These pieces are so cheerful, they’re making me forget the cold will ever come.

(1) This Derek Lam dress has a high neck and a long hem, but poppy pink makes it anything but matronly. Give the minimalist lines their due with sleek, pulled-back hair and no jewelry. Derek Lam – Peplum Back Gown

(2) With a brightly printed bodice and a fuchsia skirt, this Preen dress hits the perfect balance between polished and fun. Preen – Leaf Dress

(3) As though the shade of stoplight-red wasn’t eye-catching enough, our stylists paired this Alice + Olivia dress with predatory leopard-print booties. Alice + Olivia – Draped One Shoulder Dress

First Fashion: Memorable Shoes

(1) (2) (3)

Like a princess in a fairytale, I spend my days sitting in a room full of boxes and boxes of shoes. At this point, it takes something truly special to catch my eye. These three spell-casters stood out as the fairest (and most unusual) of them all.

(1) Sam Edelman updates a classic smoking slipper shape in a toe-die-for haircalf. I don’t quite understand how I got through my life without these. Sam Edelman – Alvin Smoking Slipper Flats

(2) Language fails me in the face of these glitter-coated Badgley Mischka pumps. So sparkly. Badgley Mischka – Humbie Glitter Pumps

(3) These streamlined 7 For All Mankind flats were a new visual experience for me: burnout haircalf. Burnout crocodile-print haircalf. 7 For All Mankind – Addison Haircalf Flats

First Fashion: Perfect Summer Outfit

(1) (2) (3)

After much delay weather-wise, summer has finally arrived. Warm temperatures and sunny days demand a certain ease of dressing, and this morning, I found what is sure to become my warm-weather uniform.

(1) There is nothing more perfect than an airy jersey maxi dress for hot summer days. Both comfortable and refined, I’ll wear this Daftbird dress at least once a week. Daftbird - Heather Tank Long Dress

(2) The best footwear for a comfy dress? Flip-flops, naturally. Tory Burch makes some of the best. Tory Burch - Abitha Patent Flip Flops

(3) And I’ll finish the look with a pair of Oliver Peoples sunglasses. Classic with a subtle retro vibe, this will be my new go-to pair. Oliver Peoples Eyewear - J Gold Sunglasses

First Fashion: Colorful Little Extras

(1) (2) (3)

I love what a well-chosen accent piece can do for an outfit. An eye-catching accessory can downplay the severity of a 9-to-5 look or dress up the casualness of a weekend style. These little finds may be tiny, but they pack a powerful punch.

(1) My love for RumbaTime watches is, perhaps, a little extreme for a grown woman, but what can I say? They’re the wearable equivalent of a snow cone: nostalgic, colorful, fun. RumbaTime – Seafoam Slap Watch

(2) Diane von Furstenberg realized that sometimes a plain old snakeskin belt just isn’t enough. A hot orange one should be. Diane von Furstenberg – Ila Snake Belt

(3) These serefina earrings were a revelation to me: parrots are naturally colorblocked. Two trends in one! serefina – Mod Parrot Earrings

First Fashion: Vintage Reinvisioned

(1) (2) (3)

Though designers are often working on the next new thing, they’re just as likely to draw inspiration from decades past. These three pieces balance the classic with the right now.

(1) Midi dresses feel as fresh today as they did in the ’40s. This sage green pin dot-print version by Lucy in Disguise is understated yet completely gorgeous. Lucy in Disguise – Regatta Dress

(2) Pointed-toe pumps from Giuseppe Zanotti feel newsworthy in colorblocked neutrals. Giuseppe Zanotti – Two Piece Pumps

(3) RED Valentino gives a ’50s-style party dress a modern makeover with sleek lines and a higher hem. RED Valentino – Sleeveless Dress with Bow

First Fashion: Figure Flattering Frocks

(1) (2) (3)

On any given day, I’m more likely to throw on a pretty little dress than a pair of jeans. This predilection is mostly born of convenience dressing, but it also has to do with the elegant look one fluid piece provides. There’s nothing quite as chic as a clean-lined frock that hits every curve just so.

(1) Fitted through the bodice with a flare in the skirt, this Theory dress is a throwback to the ladylike dressing of the ’40s and ’50s. Theory - Tenois Dress

(2) The DVF wrap dress is iconic, but her more tailored renditions are equally noteworthy. This one could live in a wardrobe for years to come. Diane von Furstenberg - Dinna Dress

(3) This Tucker dress has a universally flattering cut with a hint of ’70s retro. I’d pair it with Elizabeth and James shoes and some Kora jewelry. Tucker - Wrap Dress

First Fashion: The Edge of Summer

(1) (2) (3)

Every summer I gravitate toward flowy silhouettes and bohemian prints, but these edgy pieces from What’s New will keep my wardrobe from becoming too whimsical.

(1) Named after the Russian words for “lucky” and “dark,” FELIKS+ADRIK is known for distressed jewelry that’s in touch with its masculine side. This cuff will stand on its own with a white tank and black skinny jeans. FELIKS+ADRIK – Spine Cuff

(2) A graphic tank by 291 clothing will be the perfect companion on the summer music festival circuit. 291 – Love Music Asymmetrical Tank

(3) These leather pants by Current/Elliott take on a rebellious ’50s feel when paired with a tight tee and vintage-inspired Edmundo Castillo pumps. Current/Elliott – The Leather Leggings

First Fashion: Pretty / Unusual Jewelry

(1) (2) (3)

Generally one to gravitate to the classics, every so often I feel the need to shake it up. Slightly off the beaten track, these three jewelry pieces play with traditional forms and expectations to come up with something unique but wearable.

(1) These deco-inspired Alkemie earrings mark the unexpected halfway point between delicate wing and hefty architectural detail. Alkemie Jewelry – Deco Wing Earrings

(2) Leave it to Tom Binns to mix pearls and barbed wire. Tom Binns - Jackie Ouch Barbwire & Pearl Earrings

(3) A charming remix of the locket, this little Gemma Redux ring is statement-making yet sweet. Gemma Redux - Envelopment Ring

First Fashion: Denim Silhouettes

(1) (2) (3)

A well-stocked denim wardrobe must have three basic shapes: a bold flare jean, a painted-on skinny, and a slouchy boyfriend jean. These three picks are the best of the best:

(1) Long and lean carried to its logical extreme, these crisp flares from MiH Jeans are the new frontier of elegant denim. MiH Jeans – Marrakesh Kick Flare Jeans

(2) For a basic, barely there denim legging, it’s impossible to beat J Brand. J Brand – Jean Leggings

(3) A casual middle ground, these Current/Elliott jeans are the season’s slim, flattering reprisal of the boyfriend trend. Current Elliott – The Roller Jeans
