How to Wear Optic Prints

On Elise: Clover Canyon blazer, Yigal Azrouël leather pants, Lizzie Fortunato necklace, 3.1 Phillip Lim clutch. On Phoebe: By Malene Birger dress, Jenni Kayne jacket, Maison Martin Margiela booties, Clare Vivier clutch.

Beautiful optic prints are popping up everywhere this season. The bold colors, intricate graphics, and eye-catching combination are incredibly arresting. In fact, this solid-loving girl has a kaleidoscope top from Haus Alkire in her cart as we speak. Always up to showcase a new trend, two of our stylists created looks for each other proving just how easy and versatile an optic print can be.

Phoebe on Elise:
I love the way abstract and optic prints give classic silhouettes an unexpected twist. This blazer is a perfect example—the tailored lines really pop with wild color combinations. Slouchy leather pants are a cool variation on classic leather leggings, and paired with a tee, they really keep this look effortless and casual. The sleek translucent clutch and mod necklace add polish to the busy baroque-inspired print.  Elise could wear this versatile outfit to work, dinner, or out for a drink with friends—pretty much anywhere!

Elise on Phoebe:
Optic prints tend to feel very slick and mod, so I decided to take a different approach and go in a more organic, textured direction. I like how this By Malene Birger dress has a rough quality while still being quite graphic—the chevron stripe looks almost hand-painted. I played into that hand-hewn quality with some more organic accessories, like a copper cuff with a natural-looking patina. The boots and coat are also rooted in earthy hues and textures, but have a clean, modern shape. I can see Phoebe wearing this to a gallery opening or out with me to see Cat Power next week!

Seen @ Shopbop: Booties

Booties in all shapes and sizes are a clear-cut favorite here at Shopbop. Our staffers stepped out in studded, strappy, and open-toe silhouettes as soon as the temperatures dropped last week. Always comfortable and stylish enough to pass fashion muster, booties make perfect sense for long work days.

Where My Shoes Have Been: New York Fashion Week

Our team hit the ground running for New York Fashion Week, literally in some cases, attending shows and presentations from Shopbop’s favorite designers as well as many new names. The back and forth between Lincoln Center, Milk Studios, and the spaces in between, makes proper footwear all the more important. Shopbop buyers Jenny and Jane stuck to classic black—Jenny in sleek cap-toe booties from Sigerson Morrison, and Jane in walkable, low-heeled Alexander Wang sandals. Our Fashion Director Treena and Senior Stylist Aya trotted through the rain in matching studded booties (unplanned, they swear!) and buyer Justin shined in metallic Balenciaga sneakers.

One Day at New York Fashion Week: Shopbop Buyer Jane

Our team of fashion experts are on the street in New York, flitting from show to show, making note of emerging trends and standout looks on the spring 2013 runways. We’ve asked a few members of that team to share a day in their NYFW world. We start with Shopbop Buyer Jane Albiter, who rushed from Lincoln Center to Milk Studios and back again in super-chic Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang.

7:15AM Up early, with enough time to grab a cup of coffee and check What’s New on Shopbop. Even during fashion week, this is my fave morning ritual.

8:00AM I’m out the door, wearing new Rag & Bone Rani Pants and an A.L.C. colorblock tee. On my feet? Alexander Wang sandals. They never let me down when I’m running around NYC!

12:30PM En route to my next presentation, I breeze into Starbucks for a little afternoon pick-me-up. The iced green tea is so refreshing.

1:00PM Quick stop for an interview with outside Milk Studios.

3:00PM I’m at the Rebecca Minkoff runway show. They’ve got a live band and DJ. Love it!

5:00PM Sitting tight, waiting to see the Rag & Bone collection. This is one of my favorite moments of every NYFW. Let the inspiration begin!

8:30PM Finally done. Headed to dinner and drinks to recap the day’s activities.

Seen @ Shopbop: Seasonal Transitions

This time of year is one of the most difficult for dressing. It’s still too warm to pack up the tanks, yet chilly enough for sweaters at night. The trick to surviving (stylishly, of course) is to make your key items work in any weather. Studio assistant Kyla has this skill mastered. On a hot day in August, we snapped her wearing her favorite denim shirt crop-tied with a maxi skirt and slouchy Frye boots. As temperatures dipped early this week, she rocked the shirt again, this time with rolled skinnies, a draped Inhabit cardigan, and classic Rag & Bone Newbury booties.

Shopbop Beauty: 5 Tips for Healthy Nails

Nails by Studio Assistant Dokia. She’s holding a Rebecca Minkoff clutch and wearing an Adina Mills Designs ring.

Whether you use a signature lacquer, paint with advanced artistic inspiration, or keep your nails natural, it’s important to not overlook basic nail health. Our in-house beauty expert Kendra has five simple tips to keep your hands happy.

1. Moisturize your hands after every wash. This keeps them from getting too dry and chapped all year long.
2. Clip your nails only when a lot of length needs to be removed. Otherwise try to file your nails to desired length. This will prevent your nails from cracking and splitting at the tips.
3. Always use a base coat when painting your nails. Skipping this part can leave you with dry, polish-stained nails.
4. Never cut your own cuticles. It can lead to infections. Use cuticle oil and gently push your cuticles back.
5. If you have extra-dry hands, rub a petroleum product all over your hands and cover them with gloves to hydrate overnight.

How to Wear Leather Shorts

On Phoebe: Helmut Lang blazer, A.L.C. top, Marc by Marc Jacobs necklace, Theyskens’ Theory shorts, Alexander Wang pumps. On Karina: A.L.C top, Theyskens’ Theory shorts, 3.1 Phillip Lim pumps.

The rich textures of fall are slowing seeping into our wardrobe rotations here at Shopbop. Leather is a seasonal favorite, so we asked two of our lovely stylists to create looks for each other anchored in black leather Theyskens’ Theory shorts.

Karina on Phoebe:
“I love the way a pop of black leather adds edge, balancing out an ultra-feminine look. The give a ladylike blush A.L.C. top with a preppy Marc by Marc Jacobs collar necklace a modern, fresh twist. Now, I know showing a lot of leg can be intimidating, but a flattering, pointed-toe pump will keep you feeling confident.”

Phoebe on Karina:
“Leather shorts can look tough, so I thought this feminine paisley A.L.C. top would be a great counter, especially when the shorts are worn in a boyish, uncuffed way. Graphic 3.1 Phillip Lim pumps bring out the tones in the shirt and shorts, and a structured blush clutch adds just a hint of color.”

Seen @ Shopbop: Giles & Brother Jewelry

Things have been pretty crazy in the Shopbop studio as we gear up for fall arrivals. With all the running around, the sounds of stacked bracelets clatter in our very own stylish symphony. Karina wore a pair of mixed metal Giles & Brother bracelets to pump up her nautical-inspired, striped dress. The pop of bright leather and multi-chain links finish her look with signature Giles & Brother preppy-punk style.

Introducing Sara Designs Watches

An international background and years of global travels influence the classic, yet bold timepieces created by Sara Designs.  Crafted in luxe leathers, glittering crystals, and quality movement, Sara Designs watches carefully walk the line between oversized and refined. Worn alone, a Sara Designs timepiece cuts an elegant line on the wrist, enhancing any classic look. But these watches play equally well with an armful of bangles, anchoring a stack of mixed metals for a look that’s equal parts polished and punk.
