Ask Shopbop: Cool Weather Maxi Dresses

A summer staple, maxi dresses also have a place in your cold-weather wardrobe. The comfortable silhouette almost begs for cozy layers. Pairing a maxi with a wide-brim hat and layered scarves will give it a serious bohemian feel—just like in the warmer months— but now, add a snuggly, oversized cardigan to keep it season appropriate. Also, use the long coverage to your advantage and wear your warmest warm leggings or tights underneath. If your maxi is very voluminous, top it with a fitted sweater and leather moto jacket for a fun feminine-meets-tough vibe.

Shopbop Student Staff Picks: Alana

Clockwise, from top left: Shopbop Buyer Jane, friend Stefani, and Shopbop Buyer Alana, Townsen sweater, 360 Sweater dress, Adia Kibur bracelets, BLK DNM jeans, and Theyskens’ Theory booties.

Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. For our final feature, we talked to Senior Buyer Alana.

Name: Alana Goldsmith Brown
School: The Fashion Institute of Technology, Class of 2003

SHOPBOP: During your college years, did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
ALANA GOLDSMITH BROWN: I loved being tall, so I wore moonboots for my whole freshman year. They were ridiculous on me, but I loved them.

SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
AGB: When jeans became popular in the fall of ’99, none of my old friends understood the trend. They all went to Big 10 schools, so when they went out at night, they wore black pants. I insisted that jeans were in, and if I could get into a New York City club in jeans, I wasn't changing into black pants in a college town.

SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
AGB: Black BLK DNM jeans will always be a staple, as well as a cozy sweater and a classic sweater dress. For accessories, try Adia Kibur for of-the-moment jewelry at a great price. Finally, I love a good lace-up boot. They look great with jeans or paired back to a mini dress. Theyskens’ Theory combat booties are definitely worth the investment.

SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
AGB: Never throw away the styles you love! You will always be able to fit your favorite pieces back into your wardrobe. If I had saved my favorite overalls, I would have been ahead of the trend.

Campus Trend Report: Plenty of Plaid

CollegeFashionista is keeping tabs on the hottest fall trends, snapping street style shots from campuses everywhere. This week, we’re taking a closer look at a blast from the past: plaid.

If there is a defining clothing item of the ’90s, it is the plaid flannel shirt. It was the go-to pattern of the grunge movement, and along with combat-style boots, ripped denim, and waffle knits, it’s back in a big way.

The versatility of plaid makes it a smart investment. A button-down shirt can be tucked into black skinnies for a casual look, or tied around the waist for a more retro feel. Tartan shorts with ripped fishnets feel perfectly punk, but can also look sharp with tights and a cardigan.

Ask Shopbop: How to Wear a Knit Cap

1717 Olive hat, Tibi dress, Tory Burch bag, 3.1 Phillip Lim sunglasses. Styled by Rachel.

One of the best things about autumn—aside from pumpkin pie—is the reintroduction of hats into your arsenal of seasonally appropriate accessories. Cozy knit caps are a personal favorite, which is convenient because they can solve several styling puzzles. Super chilly but want to avoid wearing a puffer all day? No problem! Bad hair day? Voila! Need to add edge to your look? Solved with a black knit cap! Equally at home with jeans and a sweater or a casual dress, the knit hat is as versatile as it is comfy. Wear it pushed back on the forehead and slouchy for a relaxed vibe or styled with a wide cuff for more of a retro beanie look. One great tip for sourcing knit caps: check out our men's site East Dane. I love the simplicity of menswear, and their winter hat selection doesn't disappoint. Borrow from the boys and try a soft cashmere version from Inhabit or Vince.

Shopbop Student Staff Picks: Aroom

Clockwise, from bottom left: Superga sneakers, One Teaspoon tee, Bop Basics hat, Blank Denim overalls, Cambridge Satchel messenger bag.

Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. This week we talked to handbag buyer Aroom.

Name: Aroom Han
School: Boston College, Class of ’04

SHOPBOP: During your college years, did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
AROOM HAN: I love overalls, but people just didn’t understand them back in the early 2000s.

SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
AH: Overalls! They’re finally back and finally cool.

SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
AH: Obviously, I’m going to say overalls! I’m currently obsessed with a pair from Blank Denim. They have a slim fit, which keeps the silhouette modern. Also musts: an oversized white tee, statement Superga sneakers—fun and comfortable—and a chic baseball hat for pesky bad hair days. Finally, you need a classic messenger bag. Cambridge Satchel has both neutral and bold options in the perfect, structured shape.

SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
AH: Comfort is key. Sweatshirts, sneakers, and overalls are in style, rock them hard and never let a hater make you think otherwise.

Campus Trend Report: Lots of Leather

CollegeFashionista is keeping tabs on the hottest fall trends, snapping street style shots from campuses everywhere. This week, we’re taking a closer look at one of fall’s biggest trends, leather.

When listing closet must-haves, leather comes up a lot—the classic moto jacket, cool leather skinnies, a pair of suede booties—and there’s good reason for it. The luxe material is soft, durable, and versatile. This season, leather is showing up in some not-so-familiar silhouettes. Joie has a sexy black tank, Rag & Bone/JEAN did a slouchy pajama pant, and Friend of Mine designed a pair of leather overalls.

Leather can be expensive, but there are plenty of wallet-friendly alternatives. Coated denim has the same reflective qualities, and faux-leather has come a long way from its plastic-y origins. But once you find the styles and silhouettes that work for you, invest. It’s absolutely worth it.

Wardrobe Must-Have: A Colorful Coat

Normally as the days get colder, I reach for my classic black pea coat as I head out the door. This fall however, my tried-and-true jacket just wasn’t cutting it. I needed something more, something different. Enter color. The natural inclination in coat selection is to stay neutral, since you’ll be wearing it all winter. I say, go bold for the exact same reason. Why not trod through those grey days in something bright and fun? The saturated shades of spring and summer have seeped into fall, and coats are coming up in blues, yellows, pinks, and greens. I decided on a swingy Club Monaco coat in the perfect red—not too dark, with just a hint of orange—to bring a little brightness to my winter wardrobe.

Ask Shopbop: The Little Black Jean

There is one item of clothing that appears in the halls of Shopbop HQ more than any other: The Little Black Jean (LBJ, if you will). On any given day, the pairs spotted can number in double digits. For Ask Shopbop this week, Stylist Loni shares her love for this go-with-everything style and how to wear it.

I don't know what I would do without my black jeans! They are incredibly versatile. From distressed and crisp denim to high-waist silhouettes and cutoff styles—there’s one for most any occasion. This LBJ is perfect for when you’re in the mood for denim, but want to lend a bit more polish or depth to your look. You can pair them with a classic woolen blazer for a chic black-and-navy palette, or go for a more bohemian vibe with faded, distressed jeans, an off the shoulder top, and a floppy hat.
