Shopbop Student Staff Picks: Kate

Clockwise, from top left: Free People top, Dolce Vita booties, Harvey Faircloth jacket, Sass & Bide jeans, MiH jeans.

Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. This week we talked to stylist Kate.

Name: Kate Cullen
School: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, Class of ’02

SHOPBOP: During your college years, did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
KATE CULLEN: As a hazard of my degree, a BFA with a focus on metal sculpture, I mostly wore Carhartts overalls and a T-shirt to class. But there was still plenty of time for some style missteps. Wearing big, chunky black sandals with socks really sticks out in my mind.

SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
KC: Skirts with boots! The trend back then was bare legs with UGGS—which admittedly, I’m still nostalgic for—but now, I’m all about ankle boots with knee-high socks. It’s a perfect look for the last warm days of fall, before we move into tights weather.

SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
KC: I always look for items that stretch your spending money—everything must have multiple uses! Striped sass & bide pants make a statement, and can be paired with a baggy sweater for a casual look or a flowing Free People top for a more bohemian feel. Heeled Dolce Vita booties literally go with everything and a striped jacket is a fun—and affordable—alternative to a classic leather moto. Finally, dark flared denim. It’s flattering for all body types and can really dress up a basic tee. Make sure to have them hemmed. No dragging!

SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
KC: Don’t wear pajamas to class. Throwing on a cute pair of jeans and jacket takes almost no time and is just as comfortable.

Break Time: Memorable Haircuts, Fashionable Leaves & Vintage Jewelry

October, so far, has been beautiful: warm weather, pleasant evenings, and no need for a coat. But there’s the problem—I want layers and a chill in the air. I want to wear tights and booties. I know come December, I’ll be ready for these 70+ degree days, but until then, bring on the cool. While I wait for that, here are a few of my favorite links from the week. Happy reading!

I’m toying with the idea of cutting my hair—a big deal considering I’ve have two hair styles my whole life: short and straight and long and straight—so I was delighted to review The Cut’s slideshow of the 50 most iconic hairstyles of all time.

Fashion takes many cues from nature. But Artist Tang Chiew Ling literally draws from the natural world, using delicate leaves to adorn her illustrations. The result is a display of design sketches like no other.

Jewelry designer Napier was a powerhouse of the ’50s, dressing movie stars and first ladies in their bold, brassy creations. Yet in the last decade, almost nothing was to be found about their history. Collector’s Weekly covers the iconic house’s history and one woman’s quest to bring these forgotten designs back to light.

Elle’s Edit: Perfect Parkas

Shopbop Style Director Elle Strauss shares her latest favorites. This week, she tackles the inevitable winter weather with her top parka picks.

I am a huge fan of the parka for several reasons: First, military is a major trend for fall. Second, they have the ability to make everything look cool with their casual, not-really-trying (ok slightly-trying) aesthetic. And third, they're warm! Yes, you heard me correctly—practical and on-trend. It’s a rare combination in the world of fashion and something that we all need to take advantage of immediately.

Here is a list of my current favorites:

SAM. Hudson Parka
This super-chic and very flattering, city-style parka is a great addition to your work or weekend wardrobe.

Canada Goose Victoria Parka
Winter? What winter? This is essentially like wearing a very, very stylish duvet.

Cheap Monday Prim Parka
The longer length lends a very now, grungy edge for a great price. Finish the look with a red plaid shirt, a wool beanie, and chunky boots.

Cut25 by Yigal Azrouel Hooded Parka
The (optional) fur trim gives a fancy finishing touch to a handy hood. Try pairing this parka with boyfriend jeans, a cream fisherman sweater, and Rag & Bone ankle boots.

3.1 Phillip Lim Patchwork Parka
The statement camo fur is so cool! I’ll definitely be wearing this as my “evening” parka with an LBD and over-the-knee boots.

Ask Shopbop: Fall Prep

T by Alexander Wang skirt, A.L.C. sweater, See by Chloé bag. Styled by Rachel.

Adding a dash of prep is one of my favorite scholastic moves, and fall is the perfect time to trot out back-to-school-inspiration. Try structured basics in navy blue and classic knits in primary colors, like red or emerald, and finish with proper accessories—think luxe leather bags, plaid umbrellas, cable-knit knee-high socks, and loafers. Beware of the classic schoolgirl look, and instead use the trend to highlight your academic side. Oh, and don't forget some thick-rimmed specs!

Shopbop Student Staff Picks: Loni

Clockwise, from top left: Stylist Loni in college, IRO jacket, BLK DNM skinny jeans, A.L.C. tank, Lot78 hoodie, and Rag & Bone booties.

Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. This week we talked to stylist, and voice of Ask Shopbop, Loni.

Name: Loni Andreen
School: University of Wisconsin-Madison, late ’90s.

SHOPBOP: During your college years, did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
LONI ANDREEN: It's all about the hair. For some reason, I change mine all the time, always have. College saw the worst of it—different colors, lengths, and everything in between. It's was the ’90s, so let your imagine run wild. I've calmed down, but why can't I just settle on something already?

SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
LA: Vintage Levi's 501s, my oversized fisherman sweater, and Converse low-tops. I drew all over the rubber, and in my opinion they still look pretty cool! Back then, I would wear these three items together. Not so much these days, but my old standbys sure come in handy when I want to reach for something comfortable.

SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
LA: Walkable Rag & Bone booties with a little lift take you anywhere, anytime. You can never go wrong with denim, stripes, and a moto jacket. Never. Go. Wrong. Seriously. An elevated take on the hoodie—I like the luxe knit version from Lot78—is perfect for cavernous lecture halls and looks great layered with a leather jacket. Put them all together and you get a pulled-together look that's equal parts comfortable, cool, and inspired collegiate.

SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
LA: Three things: 1. You're young and lovely. Take advantage of it. 2. Understand the power of high heels and subtle, expertly applied makeup. When worn well, both are invaluable tools for carrying yourself with confidence and fashion authority. 3. If you see a look you want to try, go for it. It's as much yours as anyone else’s. You don't need permission to fulfill your own style destiny.

Campus Trend Report: Pops of Orange

CollegeFashionista is keeping tabs on the hottest fall trends, snapping street style shots from campuses everywhere. This week, we’re taking a closer look at one of fall’s hottest hues, orange.

Orange for fall is nothing new. Pumpkins, leaves, cider—it’s nature’s autumnal go-to. This year, however, the spectrum for fashion is taking a new direction. Saturated pops of brilliant—almost electric—orange are emerging as the statement color of the season. Soft pastels are also making an unexpected fall appearance. Pale apricot and peach work well to balance the rich textures fall styles bring. I guess orange really is the new… well, you know.

Ask Shopbop: Fall Layering

Love Quotes scarf, VEDA vest (similar), Current/Elliot shirt, Madewell top (similar). Styled by Rachel.

The weather at Shopbop HQ has been tremendous lately. The mornings are crisp and bright, and the afternoons warm up perfectly. This swirl of two seasons requires some clever layering techniques, so I wanted to share some of my favorite layering tips.

A warm neck and shoulders can really make the difference when the temperature is walking a fine line. Keep a light scarf handy for mornings and evenings. It’s easy to toss into your bag and can really pull a look together.

Fall is the season for vests. A great staple, vests can say sporty, edgy, or professional, depending on the fabrication and cut. They're often the perfect layer to wear all day.

Blending summer brights with fall darks keeps your color story current for hybrid weather. Try a bright accent with a leather vest, or work in a vibrant pattern with a cozy knit cardigan. You'll feel seasonally appropriate all day.

Shopbop Student Staff Picks: Holly

Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. This week we talked to merchandiser Holly.

Name: Holly Holte
School: University of Wisconsin-Madison, Class of 2008.

SHOPBOP: During your college years, did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
HOLLY HOLTE: Juicy track suits! I lived—shamefully—in my blaze orange, cropped terry set.

SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
HH: I still love my love story J Brand Love Story flares! They are denim classics that have lasted me years. My girlfriends and I would also frequent a thrift store next to our apartment and buy really chunky, beaded necklaces. I still wear some of them.

SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
HH: A MONROW army jacket to layer over everything. I love the leather details and plaid lining! A graphic tee with a fun edge, and Current/Elliott grey denim skinnies. A roomy By Malene Birger tote in a pretty hue, and with all that trekking to class, comfy shoes. I love the leopard print on these Rebecca Minkoff sneakers.

SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
HH: Have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. College is the perfect time to make all those glorious mistakes.
