Ask Shopbop: Paint the Town Red

Red Accessories: McQ - Alexander McQueen scarf, A Peace Treaty earrings, DVF clutch, and Max Kibardin booties.

Is there a simple way I can update a classic, neutral look with accent accessories?

Lately I’ve been seeing red, and I don’t mean that in a bad way! Gorgeous hats, jewels, bags, and booties have been hitting our shelves in every incarnation of the hue, from bright candy apple to rich burgundy. Red is a really strong statement color, especially around the holidays, so I like to bring it into a look with equally strong accessories. These are my top three tips for adding crimson accents:

Don’t be afraid to mix different hues—most reds play very nicely together. Try a two-toned red item, like a structured DVF handbag, to set the stage for a varied palette.

Create balance by distributing the accent color throughout the full look. Bold red A Peace Treaty earrings won’t feel out of place with the support of a luxe red heel or clutch.

Remember the importance of texture when selecting monochromatic accessories. The highlight and shadow created by fabrics like patent and suede invite a lot of interest. Plus, it can ease the worry of matching too well or not well enough!

Weekend Uniform: Borrowed from the Boys

LOOK 1: Cynthia Rowley sweatshirt, Equipment blouse, J Brand jeans, Boutique 9 shoes, Michael Kors watch. LOOK 2: RAILS shirt, GOLDSIGN jeans, Dolce Vita shoes, La Mer Collections watch.

Fall Saturdays are made for walks through the farmers market and late lunches with the girls. It’s a relaxed way of life, and for the past month, I’ve adopted an equally relaxed way of dressing. Taking a page out of the fellas’ rule book, I’ve matched a baggy sweatshirt with a white button-down and skinny jeans, or gone more rustic with a plaid shirt and boyfriend jeans. Each look is finished with loafers and a simple men’s-inspired timepiece (my go-to is always my trusty silver Michael Kors watch). It’s an effortless way to keep it coolly casual on the weekend.

Laid-Back Outerwear for the Cold Days Ahead

Clockwise: Helmut Lang Willow Jacket, Splendid Birmingham Jacket, Pendleton Anorak, Twelfth St. Aztec Moto Jacket.

Fall’s crisp days are here, and with them comes the need for new outerwear. The classic felt coat and sporty puffer are great, but this season, jackets with a more laid-back, rustic appeal have really caught our eye. Look to Helmut Lang and Pendleton, The Portland Collection, for everyday styles in longer lengths. If the short moto look is more your speed, turn to Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent and Splendid Clothing: each offers a soft, woodsy take on the tough-edge favorite.
