Break Time: Let’s Go to the Movies

Based on the number of hours we’ve spent together lately, it’s safe to say that Netflix and I are in a devoted, time-consuming relationship. We‘ll inevitably take a break come summer, but right now, we are in the throes of a serious commitment. Hiding from the cold while bingeing on movies is great, but after the credits roll, I’m always looking for something more. I decided to dig a bit further for some behind-the-scenes goodies—it’s like Googling your date, right?—and found these interesting articles. Action! I mean, enjoy!

Some movies still hold up years after they’ve been made, despite outdated special effects—I’m looking at you, Jurassic Park, The Philadelphia Story, and Goldfinger. The trailers however? Not so much. The Atlantic looks at the stunningly bad previews of classic films.

Terrible or not, I love pre-movie entertainment. Lack of previews is really the only thing Netflix and I fight about. A great trailer builds anticipation and sets a buzz around the internet. Whether or not the movie lives up to the hype is another story. Wired did a deep dive into the history of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to “coming soon” features.

Watching a movie and being blown away by the story seems like a rare occurrence these days. It feels like it’s all sequels, prequels, and tired plots. But is it really? The Smithsonian breaks down a recent study that actually proves the recent lack of creativity in film.
