Break Time: Movie Sharks, Cyborg Sharks & Shark Models

Sunday marks the start of my favorite week of the year: Shark Week. My love for the cartilage creatures started long ago, and was solidified with a “close encounter” in high school (my mother claims she saved me from a shark—and if by shark, she meant seaweed patch, then I guess she did.) To celebrate, I’m sharing a few of my favorite sharky links. Happy Shark Week!

I definitely agree with the creator of this Tumblr account, that all movies would be better with sharks in them. I would love to get my hands on a copy of The Sharkfather.

As if regular sharks didn’t already bring terror into most people’s minds, DARPA is working on tiny implants that manipulate the brainwaves in some species, turning them into ocean-surveying, ship-sensing cyborgs.

Fashion photographer Kristian Schmidt and marine life photographer Shawn Heinrichs saw an opportunity to work together and raise ocean conservation awareness. Their shoot paired models—dressed in gowns, of course—with giant whale sharks for a mesmerizing juxtaposition of the natural and the manmade world.
