Right now my roommate’s packing up and heading back home from SXSW, alleviating my jealousy over her past week soaking up the sun and sounds of Austin. Another thing that’s mitigating my jealousy? Thinking about summer music festival season, which is just right around the corner. More specifically, what to wear to said festivals. I love to plan ahead, and since there’s no way to know if the weather will be bone-dry or ankle-deep muddy, I’ve started thinking about wardrobe contingency plans for both.
Kate Moss popularized the Hunter Welly as the festival boot of choice among the fashion-forward set, so that’s where I’ll start (the only difficulty is picking one of the nine shades). I’ll tuck in skinny jeans, preferably a destroyed pair suitable for an on-stage rock star (like this one from Citizens of Humanity, in black to avoid mud stains), along with a casual T-shirt that won’t mind a little drizzle.
But let’s pray for sun, shall we? I’ll start with the piece that epitomizes laid-back SoCal chic for me: the maxi dress. And since music festivals are all about self-expression, I’ll go for an artsy, happy-go-lucky Daughters of the Revolution dress. I’ll accessorize with a lightweight YARNZ scarf to keep off the sun, a wristful of Alex and Ani bangles, and most important, a comfy pair of flat sandals.
