Designer Interview: Sally LaPointe

Since starting her namesake line in 2006, Sally LaPointe has quickly developed a devoted following. It makes perfect sense—her pieces have an air of the avant-garde, but never sacrifice wearability. We chatted with the designer about her personal style, confidence, and her current wardrobe must-have.

SHOPBOP: What drew you to fashion?
SALLY LAPOINTE: The dramatics of it all. I instantly felt emotionally connected to fashion.

SB: You play with texture and silhouette a lot. What inspires these innovative designs?
SLP: My customer knows exactly what she wants and has no fear of trying new things. I try to provide her with simple, yet flattering silhouettes while playing with texture or print. My design philosophy is based around the idea of taking something traditional and putting a spin on it to give our woman a “wow” factor.

SB: What item from your collection does every woman needs in her closet?
SLP: The Ocelot Oversized Top. It’s versatile and easy wear, but says a lot.

SB: How do you push the style envelope?
SLP: By keeping it simple. It’s not about re-inventing the wheel. It’s more about being yourself, without overdoing it—it has to be somewhat effortless.

SB: Finish this sentence: I never leave the house without putting on…
SLP: Something black, killer eyebrows, and a shield of confidence.
