A self-taught designer, Yigal Azrouel is known for feminine draping and fresh silhouettes. His innovations with design and fabrics have earned him years of well-deserved acclaim—not to mention a devoted fashion following. The French-Moroccan designer took a break from working on his latest creations to chat with Shopbop about inspiration, design, and discovery.
SHOPBOP: Would you say that your spring 2013 collection builds upon or departs from previous seasons?
YIGAL AZROUEL: I don’t look at each season with such a specific source of inspiration. Our collection evolves as I begin to design and while I am out researching, getting inspired by the power and style of women in my favorite cities.
SB: Do you ever go back to past collections for inspiration?
YA: I think it’s natural. We are always looking to both the past and the future.
SB: What is your favorite part of the design process?
YA: Discovery. I don’t know what I am going to do when I begin working on a new collection. My process is very much to react to what I find that really excites me. I like the surprise.
SB: Which piece from the spring collection is the one item every woman needs in her closet?
YA: Our reptile jacquard dress. It’s tough, but the natural colors are perfect for transitioning into the new season.
SB: If you could design for any woman in history, who would it be and why?
YA: Francoise Hardy. I grew up listening to her music as a kid, and I am inspired by the effortless “cool” that she exudes. There is something special about her presence and personal style.
