Since launching in 1988, Jenny Packham has been designing stunning bridal wear for a milestone 25 years. Over Time, she’s added evening and ready-to-wear collections to the label, and continues to amaze with her signature aesthetic. The UK native took a break from the celebrations to chat styling, trends, and inspiration.
SHOPBOP: Congratulations on 25 years! How does it feel to be passing the quarter-century mark as a successful designer?
JP: It sounds like such a long time when you call it a “quarter century”! It is a great landmark for us—a moment to look back and to move forward into an exciting new era.
SB: How has your design process evolved since you started?
JP: Over the years, the design team has grown. I have a fantastic team around me, and we now design numerous collections each season. However, I have always designed from instinct, and am inspired by the women I dress.
SB: Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
JP: I constantly travel the world to seek inspiration for my design—I might find a vintage piece in a flea market in Paris or see a painting in an exhibition in New York.
SB: What trends are you most excited about this year?
JP: There were a lot of collections that embodied a romantic, beautiful, much more feminine feel, which was also apparent in my AW13 collection. It’s inspired by the great intellectual salons of 17th-Century Paris with rich tones and hues and the spirit of freedom that imbued them—think midnight blue, scarlet reds, cinnamon, and lustrous opals. For accessories, a stand-out trend this season has been clear, transparent bags, which for me are an essential item for summer.
SB: Your designs are true statement pieces. Do you ever work them into everyday wear?
JP: I want the customer to fall in love with my designs, so there must be details that make it unique—the beading, a low back, or an amazing color. A fully beaded jacket with a pair of jeans and some heels is a very cool way of adding some glamour to your look. Similarly, a Jenny Packham statement necklace can transform a simple white T-shirt.
