In her review of the Thakoon spring 2011 runway, Style.com’s Nicole Phelps wrote: “It’s official, white is the new camel.” Now, you know a color is significant when it’s included in an “is the new” statement, and camel was beyond big on the fall runways. Chloé’s Paris catwalk showed almost nothing but tawny shades, punctuated with blue chambray and the occasional grey or black moment, and this season everyone from Derek Lam to Kimberly Ovitz, M Missoni to Alexander Wang is turning out tan.
Camel is clearly having a major moment, but was it ever out of style? After the fall 2010 shows, I was surprised by just how many camel pieces I already had in my own closet: two sweater dresses, a cardigan, wide-leg trousers. They were there, mostly unnoticed, but on regular rotation every fall. It’s a shade that can easily blend into the everyday, but always adds a touch of the luxurious.
How are you wearing camel clothing this season? I like to accent it with black or whiskey leather accessories for a truly classic look.
