Find the Best Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

Square: Ray-Ban Wayfarers; Oval: House of Harlow Chantal Sunglasses; Heart: Oliver Peoples Corie Sunglasses; Round: Marc Jacobs Square Sunglasses.

We’re fast approaching the sunny season of the year, which means new shades are in order. To help make your shopping a little easier, I snagged a passel of people with a variety of face shapes in the Shopbop fashion office to try on a sampling of our sunglass offerings. Below, the results of my experiment.

Possibly the easiest face shape to find frames for, the symmetry of an oval face works with nearly every sunglass silhouette.
Look for: Unique shapes and oversized frames. Have fun with it!
Winner of our test: Every frame on the table, from Oliver Peoples to Marc Jacobs, Karen Walker to Stella McCartney.

The square face shape is marked by a wide forehead and defined jaw line.
Look for: Frames that are vertically narrow. They’ll make the face look longer and draw the eye to the center of the face.
Winner of our test: The Ray-Ban Wayfarer.

A unique silhouette with elegant, feminine lines, the heart-shaped face has wider temples that narrow to a point at the chin.
Look for: Frames that draw attention to the eyes: interesting colors in simple silhouettes.
Winner of our test: The Oliver Peoples Corie Sunglasses.

The round face shape is almost as wide as it is tall. But take heart, round-faced ladies: it is not synonymous with chubby.
Look for: Square frames to counter the face’s curves. Sunnies with bridge details will also draw the eye to the center of the face.
Winner of our test: The Marc Jacobs Square Sunglasses.

Petite faces can be incredibly hard to shop for. The de rigueur oversized frames provide a bug-eyed look, and even smaller silhouettes can be too wide.
Look for: Narrow measurements while shopping. Avoid anything wider than 5.5 inches.
Winners of our test: Elizabeth and James and Super Sunglasses both tend toward the narrow side of the fit spectrum.
