first fashion:

Our Favorites from What's New
One of my first really great pairs of heels was from Alexandra Neel. She was featured in Vogue not long after her line launched in 2001, and the stiletto with the zip-up back pictured felt like it had been taken directly from the Dream Footwear file in my fashion subconscious: sexy and feminine but with an aggressive edge. I tracked them down at a boutique in Nolita and they were even better on, with a stable, arch-hugging fit that belied Neel’s ballet background. Over the next few years, I wore them to art openings, book parties, and pretty much any other time I needed to feel like one of those innately fashionable New York women I studied on the street. (Which is to say, a lot.) They were retired recently after their many dedicated years of service. Their replacement? My top contenders:

Sophisticated and feminine, but not too girly, and the gold piping adds a playful glamour. Alexandra Neel Domino Piped Open Toe Pump

Like my ideal shoe come to life: everything from the buckle detail to the zipper up the back is provocative and a little punk rock, and the craftsmanship is impeccable. Alexandra Neel Tandem Ankle Bootie

These aren’t my usual style, but something about the contrast wood heel and refined platform has me thinking they could be. I’d pair them with a shift or a sweater dress in a subdued neutral, and maybe a necklace or a bold bangle to keep the focus on the boots. Alexandra Neel Nova High Heel Platform Boot
