Grown-up Grunge

I spent much of 1993 in enormous, knee-grazing flannel shirts, Doc Martens, and ripped, baggy jeans, dreaming that J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. would ask me to run away with him. (J? I’m still waiting.) Family photographs make this moment in my sartorial past impossible to escape. Was the look singularly unflattering? Absolutely. (As my sister so astutely pointed out, I “look huge!”)

While the pictures inspire a soul crushing shame, I still understand the style impulse: flannel, plaid, ripped denim, and footwear with buckles will always hold a special place in my heart. So imagine my excitement when I saw these grunge-era classics making their triumphant return this season. Fear not, ladies: this time the look is more refined and tailored (it seems we’ve learned a thing or two about denim fit since the mid ‘90s), and won’t leave you looking like an aging Soul Asylum groupie.

(Pictured above: William Rast’s Pearl Skinny Slouch Jean, Dunbar Men’s Top from What Comes Around Goes Around--this is a unisex shirt, so size down one, and Opening Ceremony’s Motorcycle Boot.)
