With the arrival of the resort collections, we’ve seen plenty of khaki and navy, stripes and solids come through What’s New. But something a bit bolder has managed to creep in with those wear-anytime neutrals: tropical floral prints. These spirited patterns can be a bit intimidating, especially when faced with (at least) three more snow-bound months, but I’m determined to give them a shot this resort season, if only to lighten an otherwise wool-laden winter wardrobe.
Sure, I could take the easy route with this self-imposed fashion challenge—a Kite and Butterfly caftan with skinny jeans and booties, or a Free People tank subdued with a boyfriend blazer—but these prints deserve a slightly more thoughtful approach. A curve-hugging Diane von Furstenberg dress (pictured), for example, pops against a chunky Vince sweater and Falke tights. And a Thakoon dress plays fancy with a tailored Rag & Bone jacket and cutout booties.
For an everyday casual look, I’m taking my cue from these shots of Carey from Corks and Caftans. In her effortless boho way, she paired an airy print maxi dress with a wrap cardigan, a fur trapper hat, and UGG boots. I’ll crib her style by wearing the black and white Rachel Pally dress pictured with a Theory Vesta Cardigan and some flat Frye boots.
It’s a small way to let flowers flourish, even if the thermometer is barely pushing 20.
