There should be a term for that triumphant feeling that comes from finally figuring out how to wear a challenging piece you previously deemed un-wearable. (I welcome your suggestions.) My most recent example? Seeing the leather pant (a piece I had always considered just outside of my style range) and slouchy sweater combo (above) in Geren Ford’s fall lookbook. The look owes something to the French tradition of pairing leather with a hardy, classic knit (see Jean Paul Gaultier), the seemingly opposing nature of each element providing balance for the other. Try leather leggings from Helmut Lang with an updated cable knit, et voilà: casual chic at its finest.
