Swimsuit model and designer Tori Praver.
A swimsuit model who has graced the pages of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, Tori Praver knows a thing or two about what makes swimwear great. She recently launched her own swim collection, and we talked with the model-cum-designer about her inspiration, the beach, and her native Hawaii.
Shopbop: What inspired you to launch Tori Praver Swimwear?
Tori Praver: Being from Hawaii, I pretty much grew up on the beach and was always in a bikini. The beach culture is second nature to me, so my passion for swimwear came very naturally. Designing my own swimwear line was something I knew I wanted to do since I was a little girl.
SB: You entered the fashion industry as a model. How has this experience informed your designs?
TP: I don’t think the fashion industry influenced my designs as much as the people in the industry did. I have met such great people throughout the years who have encouraged me and really helped what I envisioned become real.
SB: Each of your bikinis has a unique name. Where do these names come from?
TP: A lot of the names I choose are Hawaiian and come from the native language. Some of them are friends’ names, some are just names that I feel fit the specific suit. I feel like each suit has a personality, so I try to find a name that represents it best.
SB: How would you describe the Tori Praver girl?
TP: I envision an active girl who enjoys nature and the simple things in life. I design my suits as separates, which allows girls to mix and match styles and colors to best fit their personality.
SB: If you had to pick just one of your designs to wear forever, which would it be?
TP: The Kalani suit is my favorite because of its classic cut. It fits great and makes me feel sexy yet still comfortable.
SB: Your brand bio talks a lot about travel. What is your favorite place in the world to visit?
TP: Aside from Hawaii, which is so dear to my heart and where I come from, I think Bali is such a magical place filled with so many great people and tons of inspiration.
