mom-to-be style

My friend Monica just told me the exciting news that she’s pregnant, which means a baby shower is in my near future. And while our other friends are privy to the latest newborn gadgetry, my specialty is fashion, not diaper cakes. Lucky for my expecting friend. You see, Monica may be a professional with a Ph.D., but she also has six tattoos and a penchant for Metallica. She’s not going to trade her ripped denim for “mom jeans,” and that’s where I come in.

Premium denim’s top brands, like Citizens and Paige, make maternity versions of their most popular silhouettes. Adore J Brand’s 12” pencil leg skinny? The only difference in the maternity style is a stretchy jersey panel to accommodate a growing baby bump. As for that belly, this is the season of forgiveness à la on-trend slouchy chic. Whether a streetwise Elizabeth and James top or the everyday elegance of a Rachel Pally dress, roomy jersey is the hottest thing going. It’s a sexy, slept-in-my-T-shirt-and-wore-it-the next-day look Alexander Wang described as “draped and kind of wilted.”

Not counting junior, new moms need something fun to tote, preferably sans yellow ducks. The Liz Baby Bag by LeSportsac comes fully loaded with functional features, yet remains sleek and stylish enough for my friend to rock with her leather pants after the baby arrives.
