Elements of ’90s style are back (Who What Wear recently did an editorial spread on the topic). Think 90210, Blossom, and my new favorite indie film The Wackness, which threw me back to high school days of listening to Biggie nonstop and hanging out with boys drinking forties.
I was stoked when I recently received an invite to a ’90s theme party, but what does a girl wear to such a fête? I started with shopbop’s spring trend The Edge for inspiration and ultimately settled on Alexander Wang's bra top, a Marc by Marc Jacobs denim vest, and a body-hugging white jersey skirt (hair half up, half down in classic ’90s style).
Party-goers took on the look by going grunge in oversized plaid flannels, denim cutoffs, and combat boots, but there were also a few looks that could have stepped right out of today’s style mags: drop-waist floral dresses, sandblasted tie-dye leggings (like a modern take on Hypercolor), and body-con dresses with loads of silver jewelry (visions of Nikki Taylor and Cindy Crawford at the height of supermodel craze). It was a sight right out of 1990 and yet so coolly chic.
