If you're equally obsessed with beauty and fashion, you've probably been to The Formula, an all-access blog that takes you backstage at Paris Fashion Week, into the bedrooms of London It girls, and on the New York dance floor in search of what makes women feel pretty. I grabbed its founder, the writer and photographer Aimee Blaut, to have—in the words of Heidi Klum—"a little chat."
FARAN KRENTCIL: Is it true you were a scientist before you became a beauty blogger? How did you transition?
AIMEE BLAUT: I was more of a science geek. I studied molecular biology at school and worked with NSF grants doing some really interesting stuff during that time. After school I worked at art galleries around the city before making the move online.
FK: What is your favorite beauty look right now?
AB: I’m a brunette so fall is my favorite time a year. These cold months translate into dark and stormy makeup: lots of blood red lips and deep wine tones. I am also a big fan of a red eye. I use a striking red just above my black liner for more drama.
FK: Please select a piece from Shopbop that works with this beauty look.
AB: Thierry Lasry shades (in Angley or Glazy) to add a touch of mystery.
FK: Let's say you're 99% sure you're going to make out with someone on a date. What makeup should you wear that doesn't smudge by the morning after?
AB: I love lipstick, even though everyone says boys hate it for obvious reasons. But I have found that MAC lipsticks stay on throughout a whole meal, so I would imagine they would last for a good kiss or two. I’d throw on some Ruby Woo and keep it in my bag for touch-ups. My latest obsession is Stila Stay All Day foundation and concealer. It doesn’t lie: it stays on forever. so I would make sure to wear that as well to keep up the illusion of flawless skin.
FK: Please select a piece from Shopbop that you want to make out with.
AB: I do a lot of traveling, sometimes just for a few days, so the Alexander Wang Pelican Weekender bag would be pretty high up there.
FK: Do you think Taylor Swift is really never ever getting back together with that guy, or does it just sound good in the song?
AB: I hope not, otherwise she’d have no credibility with that guy.
FK: Please describe your personal style in one sentence. This sentence must include the phrase "rubber ducky.”
AB: Just a downtown rubber ducky in a leather jacket.
