I'm a big fan of the fashion writer Hayley Phelan because she's really intelligent and really fun—a smarty-pants, sure, but the kind made of deep violet corduroy. So when the Fashionista news editor, former Teen Vogue staffer, and blonde Canadian called me this week about a story, I said, "Wait, can't I make you the story instead?" And here we are...
FARAN KRENTCIL: Hello Hayley! What's your favorite song right now?
HAYLEY PHELAN: Cat Power, "Nothin' But Time." It takes a seriously amazing song to keep you entertained for 11 minutes (which is how long the song is), and this one does it, with a little help from Iggy Pop.
FK: Please select a Shopbop item that embodies your favorite song.
HP: This long Haute Hippie marigold-colored dress. The song is about time (obviously) and mortality (or immortality), which reminds me of Father Time in his white flowy robes which IN TURN reminds me of a flowy maxi dress. Makes sense, right? Also this song is really relaxing so I'd want to wear something comfortable while listening to it. Possibly in a forest.
FK: What was the most fun you had during Fashion Week?
HP: Taking off my super-duper uncomfortable heels when I got home from a particularly long day.
FK: What was the most fun you had interviewing a celebrity?
HP: Oh man. Don't think it's printable.
FK: If Gwyneth Paltrow broke into your apartment and stole one thing, what would she want to take?
HP: My boyfriend!
FK: You're a Virgo. How's that working out for you?
HP: I have mixed feelings. I am not the typical Virgo—I'm super messy and not the most organized, and I hate puzzles, which is weirdly something they always say Virgos like. But I feel like my core is Virgo, and a lot of my closest friends and families are Virgos, so I guess I'm in good company.
FK: What item on Shopbop embodies the archetypal Virgo?
HP: This grey cableknit sweater from Marc by Marc Jacobs. Practical, earthy, and comforting.
FK: Please describe your personal style in one sentence. This sentence must include the word "pony."
HP: "You want it, let's do it, ride it, my pony." --Ginuwine
