Shopbop Buyer Alana on Fall’s Top Denim Trends

Though denim can sometimes seem merely a supporting player in an ensemble, we’ve all seen how swapping skinnies for boyfriend jeans or dark-wash for distressed can completely change the feel of a look. Because even a single fresh style can work wonders for a wardrobe, I asked Shopbop Denim Buyer Alana for her checklist of fall’s top must-haves.

Precious Cargo
Alana’s first marching order is to bring fall’s military trend to your denim wardrobe. “Cargo pants and jeans look so great with pair of booties, especially a lace-up bootie like this military-influenced one by Ash.” Keep this utilitarian style from looking frumpy by balancing volume: pair a fitted top with a slouchy pair, or an oversized sweater with skintight J Brand Houlihans.

A Bit of Flare
“This season we see wide-leg flare jeans as a big trend,” says Alana. “They look so great paired with clogs!” But even if your style isn’t bohemian, don’t fret. Forgo the fringe and beads and instead pair flares with a simple silk blouse and a leather jacket in a rich earth tone.

A New Go-To
Skinny jeans have transcended trends to become a wardrobe staple, but lately they’ve been getting a comfy update courtesy of soft, super-stretchy fabric. “Skinny legging jeans are the new go-to. You can never go wrong wearing them with flat boots.” Try wearing a slightly cropped pair with a belted sweater and a leather jacket for a rebellious take on restrained ’50s fashion (check out our Wild One lookbook for inspiration).
