Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. First up is our apparel, swim, and lingerie buyer, Jenny.
Name: Jenny Fuchs
School: Brown University, Class of 2007
SHOPBOP: During your college years, Did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
JENNY FUCHS: I may have overslept a few times and ended up rushing to class in my thermal long johns!
SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
JF: I was super preppy my first few semesters—think very Ralph Lauren collegiate. J Brand had just launched, so it was all about skinny jeans paired back to ballet flats and cable-knit sweaters. I lived in a plaid blazer, wearing it all winter long. I recall looking at a puffer coat in my closet when the temperatures dipped and still opting to freeze in that blazer, sometimes layering it with a faux fur vest. After an internship in the Cosmo fashion closet and a semester abroad in London, I definitely developed my sense of style. I especially played with accessories, since it was an easy way to make my more casual looks for class stand out.
SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
JF: I would go for items that are casual and fun, but will still give you a polished look while running around campus. A BB Dakota army jacket is a must. It looks great with jeans and a tee or paired with a boho-style dress and booties. I also love sleek 5th & Mercer sweatpants. The leather detailing makes them really special, and they are definitely an upgrade from standard dorm sweats. I am personally obsessed with Wildfox printed tees, sweatshirts, and sweaters. Finally, you need a great tote with enough room to carry everything from class to class. CLARE VIVIER’s are the best, and I’m obsessed with these colors!
SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
JF: Don’t fall into the oversized sweatpants slump! You can still be comfortable and chic. You just never know who you might meet around campus.Shopbop Student Staff Picks: Jenny
