Our stylish staffers are taking a look back to their college years to share their fashion ups and downs, must-have picks, and hard-earned advice. This week we talked to our copywriter, Libby.
Name: Libby Schmeisser
School: University of Wisconsin-Madison, Class of 2008. Go Badgers!
SHOPBOP: During your college years, did you ever try any trends or styles that, looking back, weren’t so great?
LIBBY SCHMEISSER: My go-to strategy for accessorizing was an all-out blitz of white: white purse, puka shell necklace layered with a second white beaded necklace, plus white earrings, belt, bracelets, and shoes. I would do this every day and to great excess. My roommate almost staged an intervention.
SB: What were some looks you loved, even now?
LS: Walking to class in the Wisconsin winter was freezing, and pretty much necessitated layering. My favorite solution was a knee-high boot/visible tall sock/skinnies combo. I still wear the look now!
SB: It’s back-to-school time. What are your top must-haves for fall?
LS: A navy leather Rebecca Minkoff tote. The dark color is more exciting than your average neutral and stands up to daily wear-and-tear. Dark-wash, flared Rag & Bone/JEAN jeans. Slimming and classic—you can’t go wrong. A day-to-night Alice + Olivia dress, slouchy leather Steven booties, and finally, an outfit-making statement ring. House of Harlow 1960 has some great options.
SB: What is your style advice to those who are in school now?
LS: Take risks and have fun. Right now is the perfect time to experiment with what works and what doesn’t.
