It’s my favorite time of year: the hot days of late summer when I live in maxi dresses and sandals. Unfortunately, it’s also the time when my summer wardrobe starts feeling a little stale. But a recent post on Pipeline gave me inspiration on how to freshen it up: rope accents that playfully punctuate everything from dresses to shoes to accessories. Though this embellishment evokes moored sailboats and lazy days on the lake, with the right styling, ropes can move beyond their nautical, preppy origins and become something completely glam.
I’ll start with a black maxi dress with rope straps by T-Bags (a line that has a cache of rope-accented offerings, from jungle-print tanks to one-shoulder mini dresses) in a solid color that lets the braiding take center stage. The simple lines and casual fabric provide the perfect blank canvas for textured accessories, like the metallic Stephanie Slouchy Bag by Diane von Furstenberg. Spotted on the likes of Beyoncé (who paired it with a black jacket, dark-wash skinnies, and black pumps), the bag is roomy enough for summer weekend essentials from books to bikinis, yet infinitely more unique than my usual tote. A textured Alkemie Jewelry cuff and beaded Antik Batik sandals top off a look that will tide me over until I’m ready to start bringing cashmere and wool scarves back into my wardrobe.
