The Components of Summer Layers

My favorite part of summer is how the long, hot days blend seamlessly into pleasant evenings. There’s no sharp moment at the end of the day when it suddenly seems like time to go home, even as the temperature drops off with the daylight. I find myself lingering on patios and sidewalk bars, content to stay out all night—which is entirely possible, given that my handbag has become a portable wardrobe of light layers fit to fend off any degree of cooler night air.

My go-to piece has been an oversized Rag & Bone cardigan, which looks just as good with J Brand shorts as it does with a Rachel Pally dress. On my boyish days, I like chambray or plaid button-downs (Maison Scotch has beautiful options for both) tossed over rolled boyfriend jeans or offsetting the girlishness of a full-skirted dress. Finally, the ultimate ace up my sleeve is my tailored Smythe blazer, which has just the right tomboy/rock-star tone to carry me from coffee to cocktails.
