the day to night dress: jennifer’s picks

There’s a corner of every woman’s closet that holds the dresses she’s worn once—usually purchased for a special event, never to be pulled out again. But, for every dress that hangs listless and ignored, there’s one you can’t wear enough.

These are the frocks that swoop in and save the day when you find yourself facing the entire contents of your wardrobe convinced you have nothing to wear. They play brilliantly on a night out, are sophisticated enough for a fancy dinner, and dance the night away at a wedding. They’re day-to-night dresses, and they’re the styles that should replace every last sheath, A-line, and maxi hanging in your closet’s dormant corner. Add a few to your wardrobe, and you may never be at a loss for what to wear again.

I asked our lead merchandiser, Jennifer, to pick her three favorite day-to-night dresses (all pictured above):

Alice + Olivia Ryan Tank Dress
The standout shade of teal will add a little variety to your closet’s sea of black (I’m guilty too), and the frayed hem gives it an unexpected edge, says Jennifer. It’s work-ready with a cropped blazer and pumps, or a great wedding look dressed up with strappy sandals, a long necklace, and a sweet clutch.

Alice + Olivia Colorblock Fan Dress
“It can be so hard to see the versatility in strapless dresses, but this one makes it easy. It does city cool with black booties and lots of bangles, but it can also be refined with sleek heels and delicate silver chains.”

Twelfth Street Embroidered Cutout Dress
“The peek-a-boo back is provocative (but not over the top), adding depth to a simple silhouette,” says Jennifer. “I’d dress it down with boots and tangled chains for dinner with the girls, or make it elegant with stilettos and layers of gold jewelry for date night with my husband.”
