Fashion’s definitely seeing red these days. Shopbop Style Director Morgan Wendelborn weighs in on what makes ruby hues so hot right now.
Rebecca: What’s so special about red?
Morgan: It’s a very versatile and classic color—it never really goes out of style. Unlike other brights (think pinks and neons) which can look young or punky, it’s timeless and ageless. What's fresh about it right now is it’s not just an accent anymore. Wear it head-to-toe, or mix it with other brights!
R: How does one wear head-to-toe crimson without looking garish?
M: Choose complementary, subtly different shades and textures. As stunning as an all-red suit cut from the same fabric looks on the runway, it’s not very wearable in real life. The key is to pair slightly mismatched shades (like a poppy-colored silk Equipment blouse and tomato-toned Jenni Kayne chinos) and keep your accessories neutral.
The sure-fire way is to pair a print with a solid—for example, printed Dolce Vita shorts and a solid Mara Hoffman bustier top.
R: When it comes to accessories, what do you think the key pieces are?
M: Red lips and red suede pumps!
R: If a girl’s too shy to wear all red, what single piece should she opt for?
M: A bright red button-down blouse is the way to go! That way you can pair it with brights or neutrals, depending on your mood.
